1973 engine removal for the first timer

I've done several of these. Never an MFI nor a long hood. Want to post a couple of lessons learned.

1. It's easy. No manual required.
2. Remove intake air box and associated hoses.
3. Chase fuel lines and remove. Label them source and destination.
4. Remove multi-pin connector from rear of panel.
5. Disconnect coil etc from electrical box. Multi-pin and a couple more wires.
6. Main harness... Important... Does not connect to car. Disconnect battery cable from starter and its done. Wires to reverse light and starter stay with engine.
7. The lesson. That main harness does NOT connect to car. Alternator, and all sensors, stay with engine. Do not chase any more wires!!!!
8. Shift linkage in tunnel and Speedo linkage on front of trans.
9. CV bolts. Throttle linkage. Heater box hoses. Clutch cable. Oil hoses.
10. two trans carrier bolts and Two engine mounts. Done
11. I've missed a couple things..

Again. Lesson. That main engine harness to sensors, alternator, do NOT need to come off.

Chris

I am going to try and tackle my '72 this weekend. Nice to know that there are not that many wires. Do the wires to the OP sensor, Thermal Time switch, and temp sensor have to be removed?

What did you use to support the motor with and what did you drop it down with? A hydraulic jack? Was it difficult to maneuver the shift rod out of the tunnel? Do you just drop the front of the motor down some?

Thanks for the timely post.

So it was the wiring part that really cost me extra time. No, none of the component wiring needs to be removed. Just the two harnesses at the electrical box and the battery cable from the starter.

This particular removal was a dream with a two post lift and a hydraulic table. In the past I have used floor jacks and a furniture dolly.

Regarding the shift linkage, you lower the rear of the engine a bit so it clears the rear valance then slide it to the rear until the linkage is clear of the tunnel.
