Re-Build? Maybe NOT!!
 

Well, every few days I have gotten reports from my second mechanic. The fuel leak he found & fixed...first guy missed it.

After cleaning the engine and driving it then reinspecting he says my leaks are really very minor, the worst is likely the crankshaft seal...but has to remove muffler first...could be the "case".

I asked about the headstuds pulling and he says I'm not leaking in the place you'd expect if the problem were pulled headstuds!! So that was good news.

If I'm lucky it will be the crank shaft seal, that will get fixed, then a valve adjustment with new valve cover seals and then for all intents and purposes I should be pretty dry and without a Motor Meister Rebuild.

Thank you guys for encouraging me to check out the sources of the leaks before leaping into a re-build.

Checking for broken head studs is as simple as trying to torque them when you have the lower valve covers off, which will be done during the valve adjustment. I don't think a broken head stud necessarily causes a visible oil leak. If by crankshaft seal, you mean flywheel seal, well then that's a complete engine R&R to do that job. I've done it twice now. Might as well adjust the valves with the motor out of the car - it's much easier that way. I don't see any evidence that you have an imminent rebuild, but you do have some phat billable hours coming if you don't DIY.

I doubt you'd have a dry engine even AFTER a motormeister "rebuild"

Maybe I have the only correct MM rebuild in the world. Maybe, you're relying too much on what a good friend says. I read these mostly asinine remarks and laugh. MM built a "race" 2.7 for me FOUR years ago. It's run extraordinarily well for me, doesn't leak, and after I got the carbs tweaked in for my elevation, the damned thing is has been exceptional. Again, I may have the ONLY good engine from MM, but I doubt it. Have you bought anything from them?

lucky you. The rear main seal can be done with the engine in the car, just slightly dropped for access.

I have bought parts from MM and based on that alone I wouldn't be surprised if you had the only good motor MM built. :D
