What's the tool to remove these?
Item #4 and #17 ---- appears to be the same tool?

If by same tool you mean big pipe wrench, then yes.
But there are special tools for both. Search for ball joint nut. Plenty of opinions on removal. |

I removed mine with an air chisel it did not damage the nut.

#4 & #17 are not even close to one another. #4 is a wrench extension that loosens/tightens the big nut at the top of the strut tower that holds the insert in place. It's open in the middle so that is can slide over the strut insert. #17 is the ball joint and the socket that loosens/tightens the ball joints look like the top of a castle or the Rook piece in a chess set. The tools don't even look like one another.

I have the steering ball going removal tool (#17) and probably the front strut insert gland tool (?) too. Could you post a close up picture of the front strut gland you are removing? The tools were used for my '78 SC suspension upgrade many years ago. I could mail them to you. Tony |
This is the tool you need to take the nut off at the top of the strut assembly, #4. Since I have not yet replaced the ballpoints in my car I have not had to buy that tool yet.

Big-ass channel-locks is what I use for Boges. No shame. Gotta get em off. You ain't gonna reuse that Boge cap anyway. You're going to put Bilsteins in if you're smart and use the above Bilstein tool, which of course doesn't come with the inserts and has to be had from Bilstein. They used to come with them.

If you buy the Bilstiens and you don't get a tool, contact Bilstien. They will mail you the tool for the top nut for free. At least they did a few years back when I did my suspension refresh. The bottom nut is a different tool.
