SC Engine Pictures

I have an '83 SC that I'm having difficulty getting the right heater hose for. I need the one that goes from the blower to the passenger side connection above the exchanger (below my A/C). I ordered one and found that it didn't fit. I was told that the heater system is probably modified. I don't know what original should look like. Can anyone tell me from the pic what if anything has been mod'd with respect to heater ducting?

Thanks, Gordo

Gordo:

The hose that you need comes in three pieces with a metal reducer that is located right on top of the fan houseing and one in the area above right hand sheet metal. Look at the pictures in the removal section of the conversion page and you will see what I'm talking about.

The reducer fitting is located just under the AC compressor. Here's a picture of my 83 with the compressor removed.

Your heater doesn't look modified to me. The hose should run from the little reducer thingy (technical term) across the top of the fan shroud and under the A/C condensor. If the hose that was ordered for you looks to be the right length, but is too large in diameter, it is the hose for non-AC cars.

This is the one you want:

C-211-274-00 (pelican part number)

The picture is wrong in Waynes catalog. You can order it here:

Gordo - one of your issues might be location of the strap around the fan. On my car the connection point of the strap is located right behind the coil (ie, at about 10:00 while on yours it is about 2:00) so the hose is snug up against the shroud. On your picture it looks like the hose has to go up and over the connection point which could be adding a few required inches.

Good eye Doug.

Is the bolt out of the fan strap on purpose?

Yea,

The bolt is off and Doug has a good eye... I took the bolt off to try to spin the bracket out of the way (it wouldn't). Either way the hose I have is about 4" short. Bottom line, I'm trying to figure out if parts are incorrectly described on the Parts site or if I'm missing something from my set up. Looking at MM83targa's pic I think I may have an idea. Looks like the hose that comes off my heat exchanger is too short or not pulled through all the way.

Could be an optical illusion, but it looks as though Mark's hose is larger than stock diameter, mine is definitely stock. Hope that helps. If need be, print the photo of my engine and bring it with you to parts counter.

OK Guys, my hose is one piece. Is it not original?

The hose I have used is stock diameter. I believe the observed difference is caused by the perspective angle and the different hose color. I don't believe the position of the strap (and bolt) has anything to do with this problem. I bought this replacement locally.

Don, does the hose you purchased stretch any? The diameter is the correct size - it matches the reducer as well as the blower outlet?

Hi,

Yes there is more than one hose. As the other pictures posted, it's a longer hose. Here is my 79SC engine, this is the before picture, I'm still working on the cleanup for the after pic.

Just exchange your hose for the longer one..

I think I figured out why the heater hose is too short

From the looks of some of the pictures, it appears that the hose coming up from the exchanger through the pan and into the upper engine area is longer than mine.

Mine only sticks up out of the pan about 2". The pictures you guys posted look like you have about 6"- 8" of the exchanger hose in the engine area. This would account for why the hose doesn't fit on mine.

Am I seeing this correctly.

Thanks for the pics.

Gordo

Also, how do you spin that alt clamp around to get it out of the way?

Gord,

The strap doesn't exactly "spin" to move, it's more a bend/pull/push. I used some lube on both sides of the strap to move/remove it. The harder part (in my mind) is getting all the AC stuff out of the way to connect to the coupler from the HE.

Good luck....
