Anyone Bought a car from Canada?

I wonder if the favorable exchage rate might make looking at cars in Canada an option. In one of the other threads, a C-2 was selling for $33.5K Canadian, which is only $22K or so US.

What's involved? Import duties/fees? Would it pass US (CA) emissions? Any other comments?

Plenty of things are a deal for Americans up here in Canada.

I am not too sure what all is involved, but last year I sold a friends car on ebay for him. The new owner drove up from the south and picked up the car. All the owner had for him was a signed ownership and an Ontario "used sellers package" which cost him $20. The new owner simply had those documents and the car with him and crossed the border no problem.

The car was over 25 yrs old, so an early 90s C2 may have more restrictions for DOT , but it should be exempt from import duties under the NAFTA free trade agreement. (check to make sure)

Here is one example:

3.3L, 4 spd., 90 km., air, pw, p/sunroof, white on dark green leather, fact. original paint and drivetrain, very clean service history, incl., clear title, private sale, $43,000. (905)508-0950, cell. (647)273-9950.

say he takes 38000 for the car. $38000 CDN x .65 = $24700 approx. USD You will of course still have to pay some form of registration when transferring the title in your home state.

I'm not sure if THAT is a deal , but this is but one example.

Micheal,

I bought a car in Quebec last year and if you do your homework and the car complies
with DOT and emmisions requirements the process is very straightforward.

I'm in a rush right now but email me or I will try to post later.

Believe that you will need to buy a speedo in MPH if the one in the car is not a dual version. Know others who have imported Jags from Canada with no problems.

Automobiles imported into the United States must meet the fuel-emission requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the safety, bumper, and theft-prevention standards of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Information on importing vehicles can be obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency, Attn.: 6405J, Washington, DC 20460, telephone (202) 564-9660 , and the Department of Transportation, Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (NEF 32) NHTSA, Washington, DC 20590.

Since the cars coming to Canada are US spec. automobiles, I cant imagine there being any significant issues. I bet with a couple of phone calls you would know for sure.

Just be careful of bring one into California. It still must meet the smog patrol. CA smog rules are the most stringent around!

Damn our secret's out!

Now there will be droves of you coming up with money (CDN)flowing out of your pockets ready to clean up the last of our great resources

There should be no issues depending on date of car. Newer ones might require some duties but check with Customs. They should meet all EPA/DOT requirements, but yes MPH speedo required (unless you enjoy seeing 120-130 on the speedo on a leisurely hiway drive).

Lost of Canadians' here if you need a PPI. I hope you are looking at a 993 in my area

Happy Hunting

There is really no good rust free p-cars up here. Everyone wants way to much for cars that have obvious signs of rusting. That's why I went to the states to pick up my car. Looked at about 10 cars up here and gave up.

Dennis.

Most P-Cars in my area are parked for the wintertime and saved from the salty roads. These cars would likely have lower miles than a California Car being they are driven only half a year.

That may not be true in the "Golden Horseshoe" area where you are, but I think it is out my way iin the snowbelt outside the greater Toronto area.

Just because you had no luck finding a good example doesnt mean there arent any. Surely an old car from texas or AZ or New Mexico would be more solid, but I think you can find a rust bucket anywhere.

I do have to admit my car is a little lighter than factory specs in the battery box area!

Big business here in Canada, I have friends that flip new diesel 3/4 and 1 ton dually's every six months and actually make money selling to the U.S. over what they paid new and put some mileage on.

That's completely right!
Yes, all the P-cars here in the Rainforest are rotten pieces of $hit. And so too in the East; all rotten to the bone.
Rotten, rotten, rotten.....
