Is the pitting caused by oil starvation or bad oil ?

pNutz, oil starvation (like from plugged cam spray bars) causes much more severe wear than what is in those pics, and perhaps not-perfect oil could have contributed, (as could corrosion from long periods of engine non-operation), but could also be the result of a flaw in the surface at the time the cam was made. Regardless, that tiny bit of pitting is what I would call typical wear and tear on an old, moving component like that.

So the ultimate fix for the broken head stud ended up being a full on rebuild, which I did myself with help from some experienced friends, including one guy who's been working on Porsche engines since the 50's. I haven't fired her up yet, but thought I'd close out this thread with some finality. Here's some pics.

That is one clean looking engine Jameel- well worth all the time, money and effort for all the enjoyment you'll get out of it.

Very nice. Did you cad plate all the fasteners? All the bits appear to be new or refinished, not just cleaned. Nice final result.

Thanks guys. It was a winter I'll never forget.

I yellow zinc plated everything I could, but ended up forgetting a couple things, so just cleaned rather than pay the lot charge for maybe 4-5 parts.

John, got the hose from ebs reno.

Got my engine in. Took about 3 hours. Used a forklift, which made it really precise to get it positioned correctly with the mast tilt. Would have been quicker, but I was extra careful.

I also took the opportunity over the winter to send my seats off to a friend for some tartan inserts. He works mainly with vintage British cars, but he's a good friend, and we traded for the labor. I used Campbell Ancient from The Scottish Weaver (thanks Gib Bosworth for the source.) I love it. My car is white on black, but I've always wanted a vibrant green 911. At least I've got some color now. My friend also did some surgery on the seats. He sliced off the old, hard bolsters and refitted with dacron and some other magical stuff so they are soft now, like they should be. The seats are great. We reused the existing leather covers, they are in great shape.

I also installed over the weekend my recovered steering wheel that I had Paul Champagne recover last December. I love Paul's work, and waited six months for him to recover my wheel. Price we very reasonable. It feels wonderful. I like the Momo's, and really wanted a black Prototipo, but they are just plain too small. Steering effort too great. Now that I have this one, I really like it.

I'm finishing hooking up the accessories and fitting CV joints this week. Hopefully I'll be starting this baby up in the next few days.
