76 targa power windows
Starting to get aquainted with my 76 911. I notice the power window switches feel like they have seen better days, and the drivers power window is fairly slow moving but the passenger power window is painfully slow.
I'm assuming this is a power window motor issue and they will need replacing to make them work properly, but I thought I would post here and see if anyone else has had this problem and how you went about rectifying it. |

When the motor still operates but very slowly does that mean the motor is worn out, or can it mean that the regulator needs lubrication and is stiff? Dont want to put a bunch of money into a motor and find out it wasnt the problem.

79 targa
My Windows on my 79' targa go down fine, but the drivers window goes up really slow. I usually give it a bit of help. I'm assuming that it has more to do with the window tracks being old. I plan to replace them, but it is relatively low on the project list. I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

On my car, its was the scissor joint on the regulator that was seized. Once removed, cleaned and lubricated the window raise / lower speed was increased dramatically. I had to use considerable force to unseized the joint, pushing it against a block of wood several times, opening and closing it. Im amazed the electric motor was able to move it at all. The window motors are expensive. Check its all lubricated properly first. Im afraid that means taking the regulator out.

Thanks Ed; I was planning on checking the guides and regulator for seizing before going further. I have a suspicion this may be the case in my car too as in my experience an electric motor either works, or doesn't. A slowing of the motor can happen but would be rare. I will pull the door panels off and trouble shoot them when I have some time in the next couple of weeks; I'll let you guys know the result.

Reviving this thread as I was finally able to find some time and pull part my passenger door today. I took out the window regulator, and although it was a bit stiff it wasnt too bad although it is alot better now that I have freed it up and lubed it properly. I do notice that the window itself is quite hard to move up and down even without anything attached to it (the window free). I will dive a bit deeper and see if it is binding/wedging on the way up or down.
How freely should the window move when disconnected from the regulator? Right now mine will stay in any position you put it in and it takes a small bit of force to move it up or down. Is there adjustment in the window tracks if indeed mine is too tight and is binding? |

Also want to check spring retainer, they usually break off after time.
