Why mount a fire extinguisher in a 911?

I know for any type of organized racing its a required safety precaution but if you don't race why mount a fire extinguisher in your 911? I haven't read any posts about 911 catching on fire.

You must be new around these parts...

Then again, living in a place called "Carefree", I guess you don't have much to worry about.

I think it's a good idea to mount a fire extinguisher in any car.
Especially one you might cherish such as a 911.
But again I repeat...good idea for any car.

I have one in mine because it's 37 years old.
Wiring gets old, etc.
It's cheap insurance.
I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Can you imagine how you would feel watching your prized 911 (or whatever car) burn to the ground with you watching...powerless to stop it.
I'd feel like a big fool....
Especially when a relatively inexpensive fire extinguisher could have prevented it.
Hope that answers your question sufficiently?

Porsches do accidentally catch on fire. Old fuel lines, old fittings, old wire insulation, etc. Would you risk losing your 911?

I even have a FE in my other cars, and a small one in my traveling tool bag. Until you've had an incident you won't believe. But take heed, even a small bottle the size of a 20 oz drink might save your vehicle if you catch it soon enough, or slow it until someone with a bigger FE shows up.

I've always carried a FE in my hotrods. I've seen too many fires to risk NOT having the option to try to extinguish ASAFP.

A fellow Pelican lost a very nice early 911 here-http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/526073-68-fire-horror.html

Why would you not carry a fire extinguisher, lightweight for a lot of insurance. It's the same old story if you have one you won't catch fire, if you don't have one you stand there watching your pride and joy burn for the 10 minutes it takes the fire crew to get there.

I also used to think that only track cars needed a FE, until I saw posts here and on other Porsche forums from distraught owners who had lost their prized 911s to fires. Some of these owners actually did have FEs in their cars and still couldn't save them but, as others have said, it's pretty inexpensive to install an extinguisher and give yourself a fighting chance if a fire does break out. I just put a 2.5 lb Halon in my '87 Carrera and feel it was well worth the $$$.

68 Fire...The HORROR

There's been lots of others. (Including some showing the car ablaze with a small, emptied 2 lb extinguiser sitting on the road beside it).

Fire extinguishers are a little like guns in the respect that I would rather have one and not need it, than not have one and need it!

Why mount a fire extinguisher in a 911? To paraphrase Rick Lee: Because a fireman is too big.

Best,
Tom

My local PCA region requires an on board FE, mounted within reach of the driver while belted, in order to run any DE events.

It does. Maybe the right thread title should have been: "Why mount two fire extinguishers in a Porsche 911 ?" .

JeremyD,

I just threw up.
A lot.
Nasty.
Thanks.

I think I need a bigger fire extinguisher.

Question for the experts: How long do they remain effective? I get my Halotron inspected every couple of years and recently had a six year inspection (required and almost the price of a new extinguisher). If your extinguisher is 10 or 15 years old but still inspected, is it just as good as a brand, new one?

Not only is a good idea for your car, but also if you need to come to the aid of another motorist. I actually used my one to help another guy out!

Those pics are disturbing enough for me. I'll be mounting one asap.
