Painting RS America Replicas

I have a set RS America replica wheels on my 86. I am becoming nostalgic for the black center of Fusch's but don't want to put my 16" back on the car. I really like the extra holding power of the 17" rims and don't mind the rougher ride. Does anyone know if I must remove the annodizing on the "paddles" prior to painting them. Should I use self-etching primer first? I refinished my original wheels (paddles) over six years ago without removing the annodizing and the paint still looks great. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
