Defective (new!) relay?

A week or so back my blinkers and hazard flashers went out ('72 911) so thinking of the easiest solution I bought a new Flasher Relay. Once installed, as soon as I hit the button for the Hazard Flasher the flasher fuse (#2) blew immediately. I replaced the fuse, then with the key in the on position tried the blinkers (L/R) which immediately blew the (rear?) blinker fuse (#8?). I tried this a couple of times back and forth with the same result.

I put the old relay back in and the fuses do not blow but the flashers and blinkers do not work.

Did I get a defective relay? OR what else could be going on here???

Relay.

Are the P/N's on the original and new relay identical?

Unhook all the wires except the 12V power. Turn the flasher on. If the fuse blows, the flasher is defective. If it doesn't blow, hook wires one by one until the fuse blows.

86 911 Targa - The connector pins are the same on both units. How would I know beyond that? (excuse my ignorance but by P/N's I think you mean positives and negatives, is that correct?) There are no indicative markings on either relay.

Bob B - Not sure how I would do what you are suggesting. Pull the relay from it's socket then use temporary wire leads to connect one by one??? Are you possibly confusing the switch with the relay?

Thanks for the help!

P/N means part number.

LOL...really embarrassed myself there! Thanks Paul.

I purchased the new relay from our host and yes it is the prescribed replacement part although there are three different manufacturers that are available. This one is manufactured by Wehrle (Germany) and is P/N 914-618-303-11-M206. ...seemed like a good choice. Comments?

If you have an ohmmeter to use, with power off, check terminals IL, R and 49a on the hazard switch to ground looking for a dead short.

Thanks Dennis. I do have an ohmmeter so I can test this.

Question: Since it is blowing Fuse 2 when the Hazards are engaged and Fuse 8 when a Blinker is engaged does this give me any clue? As opposed to fuses 9 and 10? (Is this what you are pointing me to Dennis?)

What brand of flasher? If it's URO, they're çrap. I had one in, and it lasted for about a week. Whrle is the better unit.

The Flasher relay is a Wehrle.
