Brake rebuild problem- piston won't go back in
 

Hi,

I am having a problem with the rebuild of my alloy S calipers.

I can't get the female part inside of the piston to fit on the locating rod?? that is in the middle of the caliper piston bore. Does that make sense? The pistons fit just fine without the spring loaded part, but the spring loaded mechanism will not fit. Does anybody have any tips on how to get the piston back in?

I did a search for "brake pistons" but didn't find anything that really related to my particular problem.

FWIW, I have a few tips to offer for future brake rebuilds.

Use a bleed valve from the caliper you take off to plug the brake hose. You can then use the brake pedal to push the pistons out of the other calipers. Also, Liquid Tide laundry detergent makes a great parts cleaner. After soaking my alloy calipers for an hour in a tide/water solution, I was able to get all the gunk and old black paint off with a tootbrush and wire brush.

What I did was to soak it good with alot of brake fluid and then use a c-clamp and go real slow it worked purfectly.

Any recommendations to rebuilding these calipers? What to look for. What would make one not rebuildable? I have 2 one in need of a rebuild. They appear to be different. I'll post pix if anyone can help.

I say if they are really pitted and have alot of surface rust I would replace them with rebuilt one's from a reputable company. WHY RISK YOUR LIFE TO SAVE A BUCK?
