Doug, No way I'd mess with a low milage original car. Anything you do to detract from the originality will generally make the car worth less if you are considering selling. If you like the carrot, buy it but it too, is an orignal car. If you want to monkey with somthing, sell your car and buy one you won't feel bad about altering. Ray

I have a 85 too. I have looked at all the different mods out there. I came to the conclusion, that for all the hype in cost of after market parts, the hp gains are so small versus the cost.
So being a part time engine builder, I decied to try to tune on what I had. I took advice from Joe Garcia, and tuned on the DME injection. The outcome, a 85 911,that idles excellent, has power from idle to the redline, and gets over 35 mpg on the highway. The car runs so different from when I purchased it over 2 years ago.
The car it all stock too!
P factory did a fine job, the just didn't tune for 100% output, they left that to the engine tunner.P car factory tunned them for 90%.
When I build a new power plant, I will raise the displacment, use a hotwire air flow sensor, 964 cams, and the late model intake manifold.
Just my 1 cents.

OK, one last question that you should ask yourself:

Did you buy your pristine 85 Targa for the next owner or for yourself? I'm guessing you bought it for yourself. If that's the case, you should enjoy the car however you like without serious regard for what the next owner may think.

It's a great car. . .enjoy it, modify it, enjoy it more, and if you choose to sell it, you can return it to stock or sell it as is. Heck, you're considering another creampuff. . .you'll be in the same boat but with an unknown car!

I suppose I wouldn't rant on about this if I hadn't seen your car. It's a beauty and I honestly think you could regret selling it. Besides, now is not the time to sell for top dollar.

OK, I'll shut up now.

So I'm getting the impression that if I modify my car, I can expect a loss in value. I didn't know much about the "carrot" 74, but it appears as if it, too, is all original, non-molested. I guess I would have the same problem w/ that car as well. I think sitting on the fence for awhile longer is probably the "right" move until I can figure out what I want to do. 2 months ago, I could have sold my car for more than I paid. Right now, I believe it would sit unless I sold it for about $3k-$4k LESS than I paid, so now is probably not the time for a change of car. Some have suggested I go for a 930. Not a bad idea...not a bad idea, indeed! I can have performance, looks, and originality all in one. What do you guys think of a 930? Reliability? Pluses and minuses? What years are good/bad?

Doug, Doug, Doug. You and Nostatic need to get together (just kidding). Really, I think you should keep your car and do to it whatever you want. Yes, it is worth more as an origional car, but EVERYTHING is worth more unused. Dont' wear that new jacket or sleep on your new mattress- they are worth more if you don't. Really, if you are concerned about mainting the full value do not even drive it! That kind of logic is crazy to me... enjoy your car.

To be honest, I am always thinking about selling my car to try something different (M3, NSX, 930, etc) but am starting to realize that the grass is always going to be greener- and there is nothing I don't really like about my current car! (a trip to the mountains always makes me feel better) I think the answer may lie in something completely different... a racing go-cart? How fun would that be? For what the mass-flow kit, aftermarket exhaust, and chip combo costs you (or I) could get into a cart that will pull more "g's" than our cars ever will. Legal, cheap racing. Hmmmm....

If you really want a 930 Doc's is for sale. Check out the add in this month's Peachstate Press- dyno'd w/ 500hp at the rear wheels.

See you at C & C! Sean.

Doug, I find myself in a similar situation. I would enjoy doing some events at Rd. ATL but I'm hesitant about running my car up there. I like to auto-X in my car, but that is a completely different animal in terms of damage potential. I am now looking for a 944 track car to bang around in. I know it's not a 911, but you can get a decent 944 for around $5000. and do whatever the hell you want to with it and not feel to badly. Everyone I talk with on the subject seems to agree that the 944s are excellent cars for doing what I'm talking about. Just a thought. Ray

R22,

I have the same year and model of car that you have now and went through the same situation. It had 62k on it when I found it, and documentation from day one, all maintenance and other receipts and was in very good condition.

I went the route of changing all the suspension parts that were showing their age. New Bilstein sport shocks rear, HD front, turbo sway bars, front shock brace and good set of tires. Have a nice set of larger front brakes to install over the winter as well and will also put SS brake lines on at this time.

Motor is modified very little, to preserve driveability. A chip, MSDS air filter and SSI headers and stock "banana" muffer from a 73 911.

The result is a very much improved 911 that sounds like it should, corners like its on rails and will pass ANY emission test that they throw at it, unless its the CA type visual looking for a cat. Gas mileage improved when I did this if I keep my foot out of it and since the torsion bars are stock they ride will not jar the fillings out of your teeth!

Am very happy with the car and the only mods left to do are a set of H-1 headlights and possibly torsion bars when my job situation improves!

Still want a 72 model in the future and would do the same mods that Jack Olsen and Hatari have done and build a replica RS lightweight. I just have had enough of cars with rust and not going to go through that mess again until I find a rust free model.

This is the "carrot" I'm interested in. What do you think?

If I had $62k, I'd like this one as well!!!
