Torsion bars WITH coilover

Haven't been able to find anything on this topic.

I already understand the differences of torsion bar and coilover.

Question is does anyone run BOTH??

Is there an advantage to that??

If you do run coilover and you DO NOT run torsion bar........do you have to have something like the 935 system in place???

Yes, you can run the two combined. The factory did in 1973 with their RSR's. And a lot of 930 guys run helper springs in the rear to deal with squat when the turbo spools.

The issue you run into running a combo of torsion bars and a helper spring is the same as running coilovers alone, the upper mounts for the dampers on a 911 were not designed to deal with the forces generated by a dedicated helicoil spring mounted in series with the dampers.

So to responsibly add helper springs, you'd need to make the same weld in body reinforcement modifications you'd need to make to convert to coil overs. Once you do that, you might as well go for the reduction in unsprung weight by going full coil over.

Actually, torsion bar suspension has less unsprung weight than a coil over suspension.

Thanks for that explanation.

If you don't run the torsion bar with the coilover then what do you replace the torsion bar/spring plate with????? 935??

I'm using the rebel racing 935 spring plates, but you can just use the stock spring plates with coilovers, you don't have to change them.

You're right. I realized my mistake while eating lunch. The benefit of coil springs over torsion bars is that you can get a much higher spring rate. Or in the case of the 964, you can get progressive rate springs for a smoother ride.

OP, why the interest in coil springs? Do you track your car and reached a limit for the torsion bar size?

If torsion bars aren't used or needed in coilover application then what purpose are the spring plates??

Just to locate the trailing arms??

Are there any progressive springs that are compatible with the Elephant coilover kits (or any kits for the earlier cars)?
