assembly diagrams - 78SC

Howdy 911 folks,

a couple of years ago I completely disassembled my 78SC for bare metal paint and restoration. Now it's time to put it all together and my aging memory is not as clear as it once was. So I am looking for guidance for proper assembly for this car. Is there any good books or documentation that can be bought that clearly illustrates assembly? I have Wayne's 101 book, but I need more help.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Do you have a copy of the PET?

http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/usa/911_USA_78_83_KATALOG.PDF

Come to think of it I am not sure what PET stands for. But it's the factory parts manual for the car. If you open it in Adobe reader you can even search it for a particular part number. Quite handy and I refer to it regularly.

My pleasure! I got thinking about it and figure the link to the downloads direct from Porsche would be helpful:

Porsche Classic Genuine Parts Catalog - Porsche Cars North America

Any model up to 1989. As I said it's quite useful at times to search for part numbers or key words, but be aware that of the 11 digits of the part number, the first 9 are the part number, and the last two are the revision and may be different than the part you are holding in your hand. Helpful to know if you're searching for something.

Also, a quick bit of googling reveals: PET = Porsche Ersatz Teile Katalog = Genuine Parts Catalogue

certainly there are some books that can be purchased that illustrate assembly? The parts manuals the Jonny has pointed out are helpful, but there are areas behind the dash that closely resemble a spaghetti bowl of wires. Hopefully there is a comprehensive manual out there that shows near factory assembly methods.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

I forget what they are called but the factory workshop manuals, the Bentley manual (I think started with the 1980 SC or later but lot of the info is the same) The Haynes manual, and this forum you can find just about everything.

There's a guy on eBay that sells large laminated wiring diagrams as well . I bought one for my car and it makes doing electrical work way easier.

There's nothing out there that shows how to put a 911 together. None of the manuals, including the factory ones, are that detailed. They were intended to guide technicians on repairing individual things, not to teach owners how to put their cars back together.

Learn what you can from PET, then start looking for photos of areas you have questions about.

Try this book:

Porsche 911: Guide to Purchase and DIY Restoration by Lindsay Porter and Peter Morgan of Autofarm in the UK. You can get it cheaply on Amazon in its original format, or much more expensively as a Haynes Manual under the same title. I don't know why the Haynes one is so much more expensive. Maybe it's a newer, updated version, which may not matter considering the year of your car.

I have the original. It's very helpful.

Start by asking SC owners if you can borrow their photo collections (put them on Google Photos for example), diagrams, hand written notes and sketches, and the rest.

I leave a LOT of breadcrumbs when I disassemble cars and motorcycles. It is the only way I can find my way back!

Good luck, your car is going to look awesome!
