Sealent on nose-bearing o-ring?
Should I apply a sealant like Curil-T or Loctite 574 to the o-ring that fits around the nose bearing?
..can you tell I'm starting the assembly tomorrow? First of many questions...

I've read Lelands saga on this, but there doesn't seem to be a conclusion except that using 574 might be a bad idea. I'm wondering if Curil-T would be better because it won't get hard and should sqiush out better....

Chris, I don't have my Porsche library handy, (it is over at garage with my dis-assembled engine), but I think that the Bentley manual and others covers this. From memory, there is a separate chemical sealant for that O-ring. (Not 574). Hopefully Gibson or one of the other experienced hands around here will read this and respond. One thing for sure, if you don't seal/install that thing right, you'll be tearing it down again. No fun.

Hmm, in Wayne's new rebuild book he does not specifically address any sealant here. You must not block the oil passage. Technically the O-ring should just be lubed and it should not require sealant. The factory manual also does not specify sealant here. However if you seach the archives you will see alot of different opinions.
I guess I'd lube the O-ring and put some Curil (not Loctite) in front of the O-ring where the bearing meets the case halves. |
