I didn't think carfax data goes back that far.

Ummmm, that's how they make their money.

Anyways, I think 83 is the earliest you can go back. It's when Porsche converted to the international 17 digit standard on VINs. But I could be wrong....mine has two records because some dipwad put in a zero instead an O.....

Congratulations on your SC!

You could try to see if your local DMV gives you any info. As for Carfax, see below..

1981 is the year you're thinking of. All manufacturers required to use 17 digit VIN going forward.

Additionally, Carfax only works for cars originally intended for the US market. Grey market cars, imported cars, reVINned cars (if done by DMV and not factory), cars built prior to MY81, will not show up. Don't know if Canadian market cars show up?

AFAIK, There is never a letter 'O' or 'I' in a 17-digit VIN, specifically to avoid confusion with numbers 0, 1.

Well we are both wrong then. My 83 cab is a grey market 911 and does have a Carfax record....inaccurate as hell, but there IS a record. The PCA COA (which I didn't pay for) was even worse. The ride was also hacked up by BOTH Texas and CA for different levels of "Federalization" after import by a Lufthansa pilot. Still trying to figure out why Federal reg was different from one state to the next. It wasn't just for smog, either.

BTW, I could care less as to who owned mine prior to me...kinda like getting a list of the GF's BFs.....%^)

I made a LOT of changes after I bought it as the collector's (premium) value is zilch as a grey market import. I managed to get my insurance company to give me a nice stated value in the event of a loss, though.

In Kalifornia the DMV has all the owners, in CA, on record. You can pay to have the list.

Yes, Carfax covers both US and Canadian car.

Pierrot,

As your name allude that you might be on the other side of the Atlantic, check https://www.carfax.eu/about-carfax.html (the official CARFAX website in Europe and the only legal source for authentic CARFAX Vehicle History Reports. These reports are available for all used cars imported from the U.S. and Canada and manufactured after 1981).
