As far as i understand, this is usual problem for 4-speed 930 tranny's. As usual as 1:st gear crunching for 915 tranny.
Well, mine 81' 930 crunches every time unless i let engine wind back to <1800 RPM and take it easy...then it slips in w/o problem... A friends 930 would crunch if he shifts from 6000 RPM in 2:nd to 3:rd... owner of used 930 tranny that was for sale localy for 1500$ said "yepp, it's OK but you might hear crunch if you shift fast into 3:rd" ... How expensive is it to rebuild 930 box? Is it worth trying to change syncro(s) only or is it better idea to replace more things when it's already open? I want to hear your expiriences/story's... Thanx. |

for the effort required, it's a good idea to do what's necessary. syncros and sleeves that shifted fine will often show quite a bit of wear, and may be a problem not too far down the road.

beepbeep,
I've driven a 76 930 with a pretty stubborn transmission, it was no fun. However, my 79 shifts fine. If you're in the sf bay area you can check it out yourself. I'm selling my motor and transmission to get a six-speed and a 3.6 liter twin turbo. Keith |

unless you can drive it, i'd stay away from any used trannys. they're basically all rebuildable cores, and should be sold for core prices, unless they can prove otherwise. you already have one of those. you could rebuild yours personally for $800 or less and know what you have.

turbo trannys are a bit more difficult to rebuild than a 915, due to the style of press on syncro teeth that may need to be replaced. special puller needed for them. but then, they may be ok.
