Can the tach be removed with the steering wheel in place?

I've done a bunch of searching but can't find the answer. I believe I remember reading that it could be done but seems impossible on mine. And unfortunately I don't have a 27mm deep socket

Thanks,

Alex

Oh, and while I'm at it, how many of the two different bulbs do I need?

Thanks again

I used an american socket to remove the nut on my steering wheel. Can't remember what size off hand but it is a common size.

I used a regular depth 1-1/16" socket and an extension to remove my steering wheel. If the tach can come out without taking out the steering wheel, I sure couldn't figure out how. More importantly, the shroud around the steering column had to come out.

I can't remember about the bulbs, but I decided to replace them all so I didn't have to take everything apart again anytime soon.

The bulbs are all in the Pelican Parts catalog.

Having a 27mm socket ain't such a bad thing. Try removing the speedo first and using your hand to push from behind on the tach.

Removing the steering whee is pretty straight forward provided you are mindful not to use the steering wheel lock to counter the force of the wrench. Also be mindful that any object you use to counter the force (like the club or other steering wheel aftermarket security gizmo) could end up hitting the windshield when the nut frees.

I have removed my tachometer without removing the steering wheel.

Actually, never even crossed my mind to take the steering wheel off. Just gently pry out the tach

Tach will certainly come out without removing steering wheel. Push up on the dash pad.

It might depend on the steering wheel, but with my Prototipo, it comes out OK.
Good luck,
Dave

How many other car forums would have so many people removing tachs?

Back of the speedo has two bulbs. I think same for tach.

Took a little bit of fiddling but it came out with the steering wheel attached. I used a flat bladed screwdriver with a bunch of tape on it to get the tach started. Shows bulbs as well. The tach went to Hollywood, great job, cleaned and repainted. Speedo is next.

Ability to get the tach out without removing the steering wheel must depend on the year. On my '73, the tach won't come out without removing the steering wheel, or more accurately, removing the steering column shroud. Removing the shroud requires removing the steering wheel.
