Seattle Transmission Repair?
Hi Pelican, any recommendations for transmission repair work on an '87 G50 transmission? Trans is out of the car. Planned work is 1/2 slider hub assy and 1st/2nd gear synchros.
The local transmission shops I called stated they weren't equipped or interested. Is this simple enough that an average wrench could handle it? Thanks for reading and any input you have. |

John is up the street. I'll hit him up. Thanks all.
EDIT: John is booked for a bit so I'll need to keep looking. Any more suggestions? I'll take them if so. Thanks again Last edited by AlBackus36; 01-16-2024 at 11:04 AM.. |

Akers, Chris' German, Redmond European, Squire's Autowerks. Trans shops won't be interested, nor is it a good idea.

Chris's German did a nice job refreshing my '85 915 gearbox a couple years ago. I took in to them in the bed of my truck.

Thanks Jeff. They did the PPI on my car. Chris is putting a quote together for me now.

I am in Seattle. Likewise if you can't wait for John then my favorite is Bill Radar Motorsports. I just put them in a big ice chest and ship them .

Does 12hrs sound right for this work with the trans already out of the car?

That’s reasonable.

Thanks Matt. It's currently too rich for my blood...
I see CMS offers a $1595 rebuild fee to start plus parts. I guess my options are: 1) Get the OT lined up at work and pay for 12hrs + parts 2) Send down to CMS and hope that I beat my local quote 3) Start a thread here and wade through this repair together as a group Ha! |

The shipping to and from CMS will offset the local labor. It’s all but a wash. While CMS is one of my biggest customers, I tell people to rebuild locally unless they need case repairs or are adding oiling for racing. You might have to wait longer to get it serviced, but I suggest getting more quotes from other local shops.

Good point Matt. I'll keep looking around. Local shop rates are apparently ~$245/hr.
I was hoping for all in around $3500, but that is just not reality with the fact that synchros and a hub slider is ~$2k and 12hrs is reasonable. Thanks all! |

Have you considered doing it yourself?

Take Matt's suggestion. For what you are planning to do, you don't need crazy tools and special jigs. Transmissions are much less complicated than engines. If you don't have to mess with the R&P, then the rest is simple. If you get into it and find that it needs more work than you can do, THEN take it to a recommended shop.

I think I will Pete. Thanks to Matt too. I have the G64 manual that's floating around and have the space and tools to get started. Not sure I have all the pullers, but I do have a press and could get anything else I need locally.
Honestly, I think the site would appreciate a newbie going through this and attempting to document it all. I found a picture of workshop that does this work normally. It looks straight forward enough. ![]() |

I made a tutorial and posted it here when I overhauled my own G50-50 for my project car.
They aren't difficult. You'll need a couple of bearing splitters like the ones on that guy's wall, along with a puller set that has extensions (or all thread with appropriate sized nuts and washers). And something to heat up the parts on reassembly. |

No. If you don’t have the proper tools and training for setting backlash, DIYin an LSD could cost you thousands when a couple years later your CWP eats itself.
