Tie Rod big nut?
Any tips on getting the big locking nut off the tie rod/steering rack? It is the thin locking nut. Do I need a special wrench?
Thanks!!

Rather than buying the special wrench when I replaced tie rods on my 87 I simply used the two nuts from the tie rod ends, locked 'em against each other and then used a socket wrench to unscrew the tie rod from the steering rack. It couldn't have been easier.

my early car has a lock nut against the steering rack. I have seen threads of a notched ring, but this is a big thin nut that is hard to get to.

Disconnect the ball joint end of the tie rod first. Then use the tie rod itself to break that fitting loose - push it sideways and use it as a lever. Then spin it off by hand. I just followed this same method last weekend when replacing mine - I believe it's mentioned in Wayne's book. No special spanner wrench needed for removal.
