Billy Boat Muffler - loose baffle

I just went through hundreds of posts with the Search engine and couldn't find any info on cutting open a Billy Boat to do a baffle repair.

I have a 2 in 1 out B&B on a set of SSIs.

Wanting to know what is the best way to open the muffler? Assume cutting open the right end to get to the guts.

Can anyone confirm??

Tx.

Any chance you know someone with a bore scope ? I'm wondering if you could look inside the muffler to determine exactly what is loose so you know exactly where to cut. Good luck.

yah I think they are life time warranty, or you may be able to ship it to them and they would fix it reasonably?

If you can determine where the baffle is...a quick fix might be to use a spot weld drill to cut through the outer casing (at the flange part of the baffle) and then weld it up again catching the baffle at the same time.
If you could do this several times around the circumference of the muffler...no more rattles.

Regardless of what their site says, I would call them. Seems to me that it would be a great way to support their product and the community. The good will alone would be worth the 30 minutes it would take to repair the muffler.

I have had a couple of defective BB mufflers, 1st one they fixed, but turns out they had so many defective mufflers that they stopped warranting them. The last one I sent back, they told me a crazy price to fix an obvious defect on their part (it wasn't very old and on a street car[cab], not track car) so I told them to send it back, and I would carry it with their response to the track events that I did (at the time I was in charges of hospitality for a few groups, plus people come to me for parts at the track) and low and behold, when I got it back, it was repaired and no bill..
So I was a happy camper, at least until my muffler tip got stolen while the engine was at a ship in Denver along with a few other things off that engine..

Well, I called the folks at Billy Boat the other day. In short, nothing is free in this world. They would be willing to open it and insert new guts for $250 plus shipping. I struggle with this one.............

So - my game plan is to re-enact my youth........what makes this puppy tick.

I recently restocked my zip blades. Perhaps the most important - I have a new welder that needs to be tested.

I also see the local tool store has a bore scope on sale. I plan to add this to the shop collection. This will allow me to look at the internals to confirm where to cut.

More later.

What is interesting.......

I noticed last driving season I was using much more gas compared to others. And, I found the car seemed to be down on power. That loose baffle must be impeding the exhuast flow. Hell, that will never do.......

Loose Muffler Baffles

Unfortunately, loose baffles seem to be a common defect (among others) with B&B mufflers.

Here' mine:

Why Billy Boat B&B Mufflers Get a Bad Rap

I managed to use a long neck pair of pliers to bend & yank the loose parts out. Don't think those loose parts had much impact on flow/sound - spare parts...

Potential alternative to cutting and gutting if yours is similar.

Huh, that sucks... they repaired mine for free. (though it was just a few cracks on an endcap)

I have repaired a good amount of B&B's over the years typically $80 plus shipping as it takes about an hour to fix.

Mine dates back to pre 2004 purchased by the PO. I put some 60,000 kms on it too.

I'm looking forward to a little surgery on the stainless steel can. I have commitment this weekend so it will need to be later. I will post pics.

Thanks for the input from all of you. That's what makes this forum so great.

Well, finally had time to cut it open today. Ground the weld off one end and pulled out the guts. Found the loose baffle. In short, really bad spot welds during manufacturing. I had to make mess of the inner "cage" to get at things. It will weld up again..............

I get to practice my welding now - something I haven't done in decades. Picked up some scrapes from the local metal supply shop to see how bad my welding really is before I try to put the can together.

You can see the loose baffle. This is a 2 in 1 out set up.

Ya, I need to improve on my cutting skills. Now I practice welding..............

Wow, I have to give it to ya, I would have just cut that thing off and replaced it. Looks like someone took pieces from their chicken coop and decided to make a muffler. Sorry, I but I can't believe they charge so much for these mufflers.

Sure makes Ben's M&K mufflers look like a bargain at half the price of a BB doesn't it? And nobody has ever complained of constantly breaking baffles and welds with an M&K either.

I knew a fellow who used to weld headers together for BB, said the mufflers were made from about $200 worth of stainless bends and sheet material, plus about $100 worth of labor to put together. Hell of a profit margin and still they can't put them together with any qualilty.
