Aftermarket oil system thermostat

I was wondering if any else has tried an aftermarket thermostat, there is some great info on this forum about the stock one but I plan to use aftermarket flexible lines so dont see any reason not to use an after market thermostat.
This one from Mocal opens at the same temp (pretty much, may be a degree or two lower).
Its also around 1/3 of the price of original Porsche
Ive attached some pics below....and a link

Any feedback appreciated....
Toby

Those do not contain the VERY critical pressure relief function that the factory ones do. One of the function of that component is the ability to shunt uncooled oil back to the engine under high demand and this helps keeps the bearings from starving at high RPM.

Mocal oil thermostat

I've used this thermostat (with AN fittings) on my 914-6 conversion for many years with no issues. It simply opens the cooling loop once the engine is up to temperature, otherwise simply shunts the oil back to the oil tank as a Porsche without a front oil cooler does.

I'm making the assumption that you want to use this to control a front oil cooler circuit and not in place of the factory thermostat inside the engine.

Mocal

Thanks for the feedback guys, I did find this guide and some comments about using the mocal but I see what Steve is staying about the pressure valve. Think I'll try a thread repair and rebuild on my current unit

Before you attempt the thread repair, do the boiling water test which may provide you with more information as to which way you should go.
Hope this helps.

Testing thermostat

Thanks Johan,

I was assuming that I could replace all the internals if needs be.

Most of my stat was either badly repaired or mashed up anyway so if I can build up weld and re tap the threads on the main body I'll try to replace the shims, caps etc
