Door Speakers 1974 911

My 1974 911 has speakers in the door panels. Were these done by the PO or did the factory provide any door panel speakers? The reason I ask is because I'd like to replace the speakers with something similar to what the factory did. But I suspect the Factory provided the speaker in the middle of the dash and I was lucky to get that. Any suggestions about how I might restore the door panels and still have a couple of Speakers in the cabin?

Door speakers

I'd pull off the inner door panels to see if you have the speaker holes that later cars had. I seem to remember my '75 did, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that point. If so, there are some nice mounting plates that allow you to mount a 6" speaker in the door (spacer is pictured below). You'll have to Earle the speaker hole in the inner door panel, but that's not a difficult job. If you search around, you can find speakers that don't have the garish speaker grills that many of today's speakers do, and more closely at home what Porsche used.

I just finished mine, had some 6" speakers (grills were horrible) from anoher car, fastened them to the doors, then with some nylon screen I had lying around I doubled the screen, and stapled it to the door card looks great. Just be sure staples short enough they wont poke through door card interior. Really looks good clean finish unobtrusive is what you want. Not a facfory look but a sleek redesign and solution with common sense wich isn't to common these days. Cost ? Not much couple hours work.

The factory door speakers for most years that had such were 5.25". When I replaced my door cards I installed 5.25" MB Quart speakers with brand new factory grills and rear water shield cups from Pelican. Was a pretty decent fit, looks totally stock.
