I need help with removing A-Arms
I am in the process of replacing my rusted out suspension pan. I was trying to remove the A-Arms to gain more working room.
I loosened the T bar adjuster and removed it, the cap, and slid the T bar all the way reward. I did not completely remove it because it is hanging up on something at the end. Anyways, I am trying to disconnect the Bilstein strut from the A-Arm and I wanted to be clear that I am doing the right thing. I removed the roll pin. Then I removed the nut that is just below the roll pin. But now I am stumped. On one side is a threaded stud that the nut was on but on the other it is smooth and no bolt head. I am assuming that this stud is pressed in and must be removed before being able to disconnect it from the A-arm. So what is the trick? Should I run the nut back on if then smack the nut with a BFH until it knocks the pressed pin out? Any other tricks? I just wanted to make sure that I was on the right track. Thanks Rick |
Yes, you'll need to drive out that pin, it is wedge shaped, so pulls in tight.

you need to push the wedge pin out of the strut to release it from the ball joint & the strut should start to come loose. the roll pin holds the damper insert in the strut housing, it's removal will not release the a-arm. the wedge bolt you've described with no head needs to be pushed out to release the strut from the a-arm/ball joint.
try heat, soaking in PB blaster to loosen it up some. you will likely need a hammer to push it out after heating a bunch with the nut left on so you don't mushroom the wedge bolt. even after the wedge nut is removed the stud may not come directly out. get a pickle fork to separate things afterbraced. |
I whacked it a couple of times and it came out.
