Oil temp. switch question

How does this thing read oil temp ? I see it mounted in this breather cover at the top of the motor and was wondering what it was. Googled the part number on it, and it comes back as the oil temp switch. How does this measure oil temp ? Is there oil running over it ? Splashing about up to that cover ?

Curiosity's got me wondering....

Cheers!

What year and what engine?

Oil pressure and temp sensors are low on the passenger side rear of the engine.

The one on the breather, is just a thermo switch, we lovingly call the Idiot Oil Light.

Ok. So how does that work ? What's it do?

Oil temperature switch on the breather cover is a temperature sensor input for injection system controls.
Oil pressure switch near the oil thermostat is for the red idiot light in the dash gauge.

Lol, wasn't meant that way. My old "technically write" classes kicking in.
Just the data, no fluff. :)
