I need a 600 lb gorilla!

I have just me and my son to work on the 993 engine. I have been blessed to have a sister to buy a used hoist and stand.

As I and my son are wimps, we will not be able to lift the engine.

Can someone tell me, or possibly (with great appreciation) send pics of where I need to connect the chain to the 993 engine? Where do I connect the hook?

Thanks!.

There is a little ring on the top of the engine on the flywheel end that is used to hook a chain. Then you can get the chain on the engine mount too. There is a device called a "balance bar" that evens the load, but you can do without it if you are careful. Make sure the chain doesn't pinch anything important.

This worked fine for me. One chain into the lift eye at the flywheel and one longer chain wrapped around the cross member. And I am a wimp too, and don't have a son yet.....

I saw that 'eyelet' thingy. I did not think that one will balance the engine.

Without the balancer, would the engine lift 'equally'?

Ingo,

Thanks for the exra effort of taking picture.

John,

well, the 'eyelet' thingy alone wouln't balance the engine. If you look at my picture there are three points where the chains attack. One at the eye and two at either side of the crossmember. The other chains hanging down are from the hoist.

Without the balancer, would the engine lift 'equally'? the balancer is merely to avoid the chains from pinching the fan housing too bad. If have seen people using just a big eye instead of the bar. But the bar is only 30$ at Habour Freight

Ingo,

Thanks for the exra effort of taking picture.

Anytime...

Chuck,
The Bimmer and Buick were gifts from my father.
They will never leave my possession.
The Buick only needs the fuel pump rebuilt and door panels installed to be complete. The rubber diaphram in the pump gave out a number of years ago.

The 2002 will become my personal club racer as soon as my wife and I find ourselves in a place we know we are going to be staying for at least a couple of years. Right now I'm hot for orders... either that or I'm getting out of the Military... either way we'll probably be moving before not too long.
I also now own a 1973 BMW R75 road bike. Beautiful machine...
