1974 Porsche 911 Targa
Hello. Have some questions about my newly acquired 911 Targa. Trying to identify the engine that was rebuilt prior to my ownership. The lower magnesium case was replaced with an aluminum case. The numbers by the right side of the fan are #900594. the camshaft housing is #901.105.111.OR and the 5 speed gear box #915 301 101 OR Any help appreciated.

Car colour was metallic ice green. Wheels will be replaced with factory style.

Welcome to the forum!
Any paperwork from the previous owner on the engine rebuild? Pictures of the engine bay may provide some better answers. |

Unfortunately the last owner of 15 years had routine maintenance and repairs done. The chap only put 5000 miles on the car during his ownership. The lower case replacement work was does by the original owner. The case does indeed look like aluminum.

I don't have the appropriate references to decode that engine number; somebody will chime in.
It looks like your CIS (fuel injection system) has a desirable metal air box. Fuel injection looks like early 2.7L stuff. |

Wow! My book says it's a 1965 case (early jan - July 1965)> .... 2.0 Liter originally. Perhaps modified to a 2.7? Dunno.
Looks like the CIS from the 74 put on top. Not the original shroud. Not the original airbox as Fan pointed out, that one is metal (upgrade). Someone hacked the nose off the air cover to let more air in. Looks like you may have new shocks too. I think there's an early S registry board, that can give you more info on the case. Could be worth something since it's so so early. Or start a new thread with a title like: "Is my 900XXX case worth anything?" something like that in the marketplace forum or here in the tech forum.

Crikey Duane, 1965. Very interesting indeed. Definitely gives me something to work with. The last owner of 15 years told me the original owner had the work done in California some 20 years ago due to the weak magnesium case. Very quick and responsive I must say. Will follow your advise and welcome more input, Cheers Graham

Ice green metallic is a nice color. Mine was originally that color also but painted red at some time. I plan on bringing it back soon.

15X6 Cookie cutters or Fuchs would be period correct. I would sell the case and fund a 3.2SS or look for a nice rebuilt 2.7
How happy are you right now? :-)

Interesting development.
If it were mine, I'd be trying to get that case back to somebody with an early car who can benefit from it. Hopefully it hasn't been badly hacked/modified and still has some value to somebody. My opinion: It is easier to go get a 3.2 or a 3.0 than it is to deal with a 2.7. |

Yes I would like to let the case go to someone who has an early car and source a newer motor. The original owner who lived in California and was a pilot for Lufthansa. I can only assume he may have had a problem with the magnesium cased engine and used this case. The second owner had it serviced in Dallas Tx and then finally here in Florida.
