What I've learned from machining and machinists at work, is you don't need really good drill bits, just make sure you use a good tapping fluid.

We drill through SS with jobber bits all the time.

So you have no issues with Chinese made bits? That is what you appear to be implying.

The term "jobber" has to do with the length of a drill bit. Not the quality.

fastenall has good quality bits that are reasonable.
i do like Hanson hs bits the most, which are on most tool trucks

I've never gotten anything regrettable from McMaster-Carr.

What are you drilling?

For steel/Aluminum, for the most part I use bits from Harbor freight, buy and index set every couple years. Can but the common sizes in bulk, like 1/8" for pop rivets. Unibit for 'large' holes.

Most people tend to drill too fast, and not use enough pressure. The bit should always be making a chip (or curl) When you drill too fast, the bit rides on top and just generates heat(gets dull)

Wood, use spade or forstner bits.

I didn't know that. Thought it meant cheaper priced.
