Question Windshield replacement- Insurance

I'm having my windshield replaced tomorrow. The garage says I have to pay for new rubber surround. They don't usually change them they say. I assumed they were changed automatically because the way our windshields float in the rubber. Safety measure? I also assumed the insurance was paying for the rubber. Garage says no!

What have you guys done when replacing windshield. Change rubber or not change? Did insurance pay?

My insurance did pay for the new gasket. I'd agree that both the windshield and the gasket are destroyed on removal. Don't watch the process if you're squeemish. Do watch it if you're curious.

MAKE the installer bend the (new) metal trim around the glass edges before installation. Otherwise, the trim won't fit properly.

I had mine changed last year. New rubber was part of the job and was covered by insurance. I'd find a new shop if they're telling you that it's not part of the job.

Call your local dealer and ask who they use for glass - and go there. They won't jerk you around like this shop is trying to.

This shop is trying to get you for the cost of the gasket that the insurance company is going to pay for as well. Take your business elsewhere from these crooks.

Sounds like this company has no idea what they're talking about or are just crooks. In either case, not someone you want trying to fit the trim pieces back in the windshield gasket. Get your car the heck out of there, ASAP.

Update-

Had windshield replaced today. Don,Mark- The shop I was talking about WAS the dealership. Only one in town. They get some private guy with rusty old van and company name looked like was roller painted on. I should of stopped it there. But didn't(stupid me). Guy says he done alot of 911's. Super, you were right, it's an ugly sight.

First, guy punctures my headliner from inside trying to get his tool under rubber. My headliner isn't in best shape but still. What if I had done the headliner like I wanted too a month ago.
-then shatter's the hell out of winshield little pieces all over car and in car
-tries to remove the metal trim before getting windshield out. Bends it a little here a little there.
-Metal trim is not too bad but he tells me it will look perfect when in. What's his idea of perfect?
-45min trying to get new rubber on windshield while on the table. Can't do it. I notice he's trying it on backwards (wider part on narrow end of windshield and narrow end on wider part of glass. I tell him and he comes up with some excuse about the rubbers seam should be on bottom of glass. They made a mistake making the rubber I guess.
-Puts same metal trim back on. Another 45min. You can tell it's not perfectly straight but maybe my perfect is too perfect..
Now I have that little argument in my head; Don't be so anal Joseph ,yeah but it's driving me crazy, it's okay you won't notice it in a day or two, yeah but it should be perfect this is my dream car. Anyways the angel on my left shoulder won out over devil on my right. I didn't say anything.
-gets most of the rest right (with the rope and all)
-washed car right after checking for leaks none sofar

Went to pay for deductible and the rubber(I hadn't read this post since posting) but was served by different service rep. I guess this guy hadn't spoke to first one because he didn't mention the cost for rubber.

Moral of the story. If not 100% comfortable with the situation get out fast.
P.S. especially if the guy paints his company name on the truck with a roller.

Hmmm, stay off your feet for a few days and maybe try some Anusol and your ass should start feeling better soon.

Tried to get the trim out before removing the windshield? What a moron. I have removed four 911 windshields, and the proper way to do it is to cut the gasket out from the outside, slicing the trim out at the same time. What a MORON. I am so mad right now I can't speak. I definitely feel for you man!!! AND this was a dealer????? WTF!@!!!!!!! What dealer was this? I'm sooooo sorry to hear about this Joseph, I know how it feels when someone molests your cherished car. I had to learn the hard way about air wrenches and lug nuts...

If this is not your daily driver, I'd make an example of this shop. Let them leave the old rubber in; but first get a written warranty in advance of the work that warrents it will not leak. Read it carefully to make sure there are no underhanded exclusions. Notify the shop and your insurance company in writing that they will be held accountable if it leaks and of any subsequent breakage of the new windshield when trying to fix the leak. I think they will blink first. Also, contact your insurance company and see what they pay for. Typically you pay a deductible so if they will pay for the seal, it's none of the shop's business.

If you don't feel like playing hardball or it is your daily driver, take it somewhere else and get the rubber trim replaced with the window. This is standard from what I've seen.

Good luck

Joseph,

When I had my windshield replaced, the troglodyte that did it performed such a poor job that when it came time to sign off on the work, I refused, and went back to my insurance company telling them the story and asking for another referral. They complied.

When I refused to sign off on the glass company's work order, the installer literally got belligerent with me to the point where I said "Terry, go back inside your shop now, or there will be consequences. It's not my fault you don't know how to install a Porsche windshield."

The metal trim was all bent up, and not even all the way inserted into the gasket in places. He'd tried to put the trim in *after* roping in the windshield. Moron. Suffice it to say I was pretty pissed off.

I would take this to your insurance company, and tell them the installer peirced your headliner with a tool, and ask for a new one, dealer installed. And take it to a different city.

Good luck.
