Rawk,
What is the need for the pulley on the outside?
I thought the crank gets spun by the piston/rods.
And the crank is attached to the flywheel.

The pulley is driven by the crank and with the associated belts, drive the alternator, fan and AC compressor.

And on water cooled engines, the water pump, fan clutch, etc. etc., is driven from that end as well (not to mention a large, harmonic balancer in many cases).

As you can imagine, Woody, it's not practical to have all that gear packaged on one end of the engine alone - hence the need for both ends to be open. I'm sure that the overall system balance is better that way, too.

Oh, right, the front of the engine needs an exposed pulley (that is driven by the crank) to drive the various belts.
Right, got it. Rear of crank connects to flywheel to move the car, and front connects to external pulley to drive the acc. belts.
