911Rally Car
I'd like to introduce the latest 911 to join the fleet. A 1982 SC which was built up in 2011 to become a dedicated gravel rally 911. Cars in gravel configuration like this are hard to find in Australia, because of their rarity. There are less than a dozen in total it seems. This one is homologated through CAMS, as it complies with the historic rally regulations. I'll leave the exact spec for a later post, but you'll see from the photos that we are tearing into it by cleaning it and sorting out the wiring, changing the battery location, and generally turning it into a car to be proud of. These projects can get messy very quickly if you stray from the main game, which in this case is to maintain and improve the cars suitability for gravel rallying, not to make it into a concours bitumen only 911. So, while we are being fussy, we are mindful that this car is there to be used.

Weve been using a boat cleaning product called Versatile to wash the car. It is very good, as it has no acid in it.

Navigation gear out and the frame off to the powder coaters together with a new dash panel, as the old one was not up to scratch. Beer needed by the end of day one.
![]() Rather awful wooden fuse panel headed to the bin ![]() Replaced with absolutely nothing. Weighs less! ![]()

Battery in the worst possible spot, right behind the driver. Not for long!

So, thats about it for now until next week, when the battery will lose 20 pounds and move to the front left corner. The new roll bar padding, the cleaned seats and harnesses, and the dash updates will go in. The windows are off being tinted and need refitting.
Front wheel bearings to be replaced, oil and filter changed, ait filters cleaned, valves reset, and mechanically we are nearly done. Then its stickers on and off to a test day at a rallycross track.

I love this.
I wish we had rallies in the US. It's been tried several times but it never works out. Gravel rallies have to be insane. ![]() Richard Newton |

The gravel isn't so bad but the trees can be scary from time to time

Very envious.
Nice work. The SC rally cars are rather special, and quite well documented on youtube. There are a few in Europe that sound outrageous. Some great clips on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v… And this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6C3TEjWYXM Do the right thing and post a video of the testing.

Walter Rohrl in 911 SC
Quote:
The White car was a tribute to the Rohrl 911. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLe3OCwefiY See Walter Rohrl competing in his Porsche 911 SC - lots of pretty Oz scenery here with plenty of loud classic 911 rally cars to scare away the tasmanian devils. |

Nice red 911 Chris. I took a look at your Fenn Lane catalogue. Good products!
Glad to see that there are some gravel rallies in the US. The white Walter Rohrl SCRS is a lovely thing, but its been a long time since it saw any dirt as Targa Tasmania is a tarmac rally. Nice video. Walter managed to break a half shaft in Targa Tasmania that year, just as he had in Rally San Remo thirty odd years before. I dont think he was amused either time! Located some photos of the rally 911 in action since 2011. Not the best clarity but still fun to see, and thank you to the photographers. Regards to Rob the previous owner, as he was behind the wheel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So, todays jobs involved cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning. The rally 911 now looks like this.
![]() Polished, wheels cleaned, rear windows tinted and ready to be fitted tomorrow.

The back bumper looks rather sweet, thanks to Richos magic. We call it the "delete checker plate" option.
This is how it used to look versus todays version. ![]() ![]()

We also cracked on with the interior refit. The RS door cards and door tops are now clean, and back on the car. They look fantastic!

We also had the dash panel powder coated. Heres the before and after shots. It looks messy in there, but believe me it will all come together, as we have taken the opportunity to take all sorts of extraneous wiring, cable ties, and other bits out. The yellow cabling is for the RallySafe GPS box that is a mandatory requirement here for rally events. It mounts on the bracket to the right of the main nav gear panel and the yellow cable is looped out of the way when the RallySafe is fitted for each event. The yellow cable has orphan connections and cant be shortened.

We got the newly tinted windows fitted to the 911. Tough job but we got there in the end. We then made up some new black mudflaps from 4mm polyurethane sheet we bought just around the corner from the workshop. They dont photograph well but look very smart, at least they will until the first 100 metres of the next event! Our first event is on the 21st of this month so have to get a wriggle on to be ready.

Been giving some thought to rally livery. Perhaps something like these zebra stripes, albeit without the golfer.
