Engine drop in just one minute?

Correction, he said 30 seconds!

This post was regarding a better way to change 930 spark plugs (partial engine drop)

Yowsa! Let me suggest that you're going about it all wrong. It takes maybe two minutes per side to remove the rear engine mounts and all of 30 seconds to drop the engine about six inches to expose the plugs inside the wheel wells. Plugs out and in a a couple of minutes each, a minute or so to raise the engine back into position and 2-5 minutes (depending on how deft you are at aligning the mounts while holding the large washers in place and starting the threads) per side to re-install the mounts. I could change the plugs -- on a twin-plug 930 -- in an hour from the time I walked into the garage until the last tool was cleaned and put away.

Can you slowly tell the n00bs how you can do a partial engine drop in just one minute?

Is this how it's done?

1) Support engine from below with floor jack.
2) Remove both motor mounts on the corners of the engine bay. (see pic)
3) Lower jack.

How far can you go before ripping something?

I don't believe the engine will move very far without also removing the tranny bolts as well. This is typically referred to as partial engine drop, and should get you about 6 inches. Just be careful that the jack doesn't go down too quickly as you could damage wires or hoses if you aren't careful.

our young tech left the limiting washers off the top of the engine mounts.
on a recent install on a 71t
he called on the test drive, after he went over a dip
when we arrived, the new heat exchangers were dragging on the pavement.

engine mounts, trans mounts, speedo cable, shifter coupler, lower valance
muffler and the exchangers were tweaked
esp the exchangers

You have the procedure exactly right. You don't need to undo the transmission bolts.

You can lower it 4 inches easily and probably more. For the first time just do it slowly an inch at a time and check that nothing is getting caught.

Easy peazy lemon squeezie as my 5 year old says.

Two questions

What, aside from spark plugs is made easier with a partial drop?

Also. When I did my motor mounts, rethrewding the bolts was really challenging. What's the trick.

The trick is to realize that the engine mount brace is flexible and bends with some coaxing.

As I recall some are not threaded and use a bolt (earlier cars?)

The more you do it, the easier it is......

Yes earlier cars are nut and bolt.... not sure when the switch to a threaded boss happened.

Put a knee on the bumper with your weight to push the car down while you thread the bolts. You're pushing against the shock absorbers which are lifting the car.

A guy did that on a 930 at the dealer I worked at in the 70s, damaged a fuel line and had a fire.

I use this method to do valve adjustments. Be VERY CAREFUL not to stretch or bend anything! Fuel lines throttle loop and wiring harness are all bound to the chassis, among other things. Axles also only move on engine side and tend to hang on things.

Weird to think the entire engine is held up by those 2 bolts

4 bolts..... and how many more do you need?

Kraftwerk 01-19-2017 08:57 PM

Yeah.. 4 wow. If you remove the tranny mounts and engine mounts & remove the tranny brace entirely ...jeeze, is that just four bolts ?
It would certainly make the Banana / Trialling-Arm Nut, 22mm ( &bolt) a heck of a lot easier to get at...that's an educated guess, btw. Maybe you wouldn't have to even actually lower the engine, you would just remove tranny mounts & that brace.. Hmmm... you got me thinking here..
