Rear Seat Delete Project

Since I'm waiting for some parts to be cast for my SC's engine management project I've been killing time working on another item, a Rear Seat Delete panel. Since I have some experience with composite materials, I decided to go that route. I'm just about finished with it, so I think it's ready for "prime time."

My goal here was maximum utility, a "factory" look, and finally weight savings. For those interested these panels weigh, including hinges and carpeting, about 6.5# each. Which is a significant savings over the seats they replace. I carved the hinges out of 2X2X1/8 aluminum angle and the panels mount on the same pivots and pivot bolts as the original seat backs.

The three images include here show the installation "closed up," as you would see it through the car window. The next two images show it with the front flap up showing the access holes where you can put things in and out of the hidden space under the panels, and the last image shows the panel lifted up for maximum access. Both sides lift.

For step-by-step photos of how I made these see:

Those are great. I deleted my seat backs too, but I often pick up groceries and other things and not having a flat area to put things on is a pain. Well done!

Hope you don't mind me posting a pic, but I'm very impressed with your construction. The hinges, design and final product is very nice.

Any chance you want to make these for other people? This is a great idea and I have been thinking of doing a rear seat delete. You way is much better than not having any shelf. I also get items and need a place to store stuff.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I will have to think about making them for interested parties. I haven't totaled up the cost of it as yet, much less the time involved. (As in most Porsche-related projects it may be a case of I'd rather not know!). The time is another factor in itself; actual hands-on time isn't as much as you might think. A "work a half-hour then wait a day for it to cure well, before the next step" sort of thing.

I like the idea of securing the carpet with magnets. Well done.

I would purchase a set of drawings if you make them available.

I think you could sell quite a few if you were so inclined to make them.

Put me down.
