1974 Targa Reacquired after 18 years!
Well let me start by saying I'm very happy to once again own an air cooled 911! That being said this 1974 911T has some sentimental value, the car belong to me 18 years ago.
I sold the car to my cousin in 97, he enjoyed driving the car on weekends for roughly 3 years until it began to puff white smoke, fearing the worse he decided to park it in the garage where's it's been sitting covered since 2001. The good news.... it's been in WA state it's whole life. let's jump forward a few weeks ago I happen to start looking at Porsches again when I realized that my cousin may still have my 911. I reached out to him and after talking for about an hour we made a straight trade my 68 stang for the Targa. I drove out a few days later to see the car and to my surprise the exterior is in amazing condition, it looks like it's been in a bubble. The interior is all there but the seats are torn and the dash is cracked. The car is literally rust free! The pan looks to be perfect and the all the trouble areas look spotless. My cousin still had all the records that i gave him dating back to 1976 "The bad" 1) The car was repainted perfectly back in the 80's (I actually have the repaint receipt) That's when the whale tail and used steel flares were added, it's original color was Irish green. 2) It's been sitting all these years so mechanically I'm not sure what to expect but it was running when he parked it so I'm sure it's fine. Pics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pics Today I had the car flat bedded to a local German import shop so they can at least get the car running. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk Last edited by riverstonefly; 11-24-2016 at 06:36 AM.. |

wow - that's a nice story and congrats to get the car back. For me it's a tad too red but that's just my personal opinion. That being said, get it sorted mechanically and then enjoy driving it

How cool to get back the car you owned. I am sure it will be running and driving in no time. What are your plans?

excellent.
I had sold my 85 targa in '97 only to buy it back in '99, long story. still have it, did some mild mods for DE and now retired from that and slowly working back to stock. good luck on getting yours back on the road.

The paint situation is easy. Black wheels, return targa band to stainless and get chrome headlight rings. None of that should be terribly expensive. Hope the 2.7 comes back to life easily. I dropped a new 3.2 in my 1974 but, frankly, nothing sounds quite like a 2.7 and they love to rev.

Great to hear that your old friend found its way home!
I always prefer car stories when they have a sentimental history behind them. |

Well I scored a motor
![]() specs and pics below 1995 993 3.6. In my opinion, the best air cooled 3.6 from the best year. It was pulled from a convertible automatic by Weekend Rides with less than 80k miles. This is also important as most convertibles were not raced or significantly abused. This one was clean and dry. They resealed the engine and performed a leak down. All cylinders were less than 6% and while I don't have documentation, I was there and witnessed the leak down. That was helpful as I've never seen it performed before. What do I mean by "reseal"? A common question with several answers. Here's mine: Replace every seal and gasket that is accessible without removing the cams, cam towers, or chain boxes. If you know these engines as well as I do, you know that means the long block stays intact, but all the normal oil leakage areas are addressed including chain box covers, tensioner covers, valve covers, breather, front cam ports, senders, etc. while the cam towers were not removed, there was no leakage from this area. The engine has the EGR plugs and block oil cooler bypass installed (another cool feature of this 993 is that an engine oil cooler can be installed if desired). The main crank pulley and fan have been replaced and converted to 3.0/3.2 style where the belt is adjusted by shims. A simpler set up It also has a conversion flywheel that allows a 915 clutch and transaxle to be bolted on, so that's included also. The flywheel and clutch came from Patrick Motorsports. I purchased the 915 from pelican forum member Spuggy. It contains a Guard LSD set up 60/40 and can be used with a tranny cooler if desired. The tranny mount with Wevo bushings is included as is the gear reduction starter. PMO 50 EFI is also installed with the MAP, TPS, knock detectors, cylinder head temp, flywheel position and cam position senders installed (others are in the parts bag). Coil packs are mounted over the engine breather and include ignition wires to spark the twin plug heads. The Tec3 ECU, wiring harness and fuse/relay panel is also included. As is a wide band O2 sensor and controller. Even the throttle linkage down to the bell rank on the tranny! Billy Boat 1 3/4" stainless steel headers, with an O2 port and special heater boxes that have 3.6 inlets on the back to connect to the engine and 3.0/3.2 outlets on the front to connect directly to your car are included. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The Car is finally home and after tank removal and a quick inspection a few minor rust issues found but nothing major.
