Plus one on the solid state unit with the pump prime. Those old style relays including the German ones are just too unreliable.

I would say 19 years of working without fault is okay reliability. I guess we will see how the solid state ones do in 19 more.

No, I am not kidding actually.
If you read my posts, I removed one from my car after 19 years of use. The coil failed on one relay. I modified the failed unit to work as a spare. I had no spare before then in my 28 years of ownership of this car. Not sure how this relay got in there 19 years ago...I don't recall ever being stranded except for a cylinder temp sensor back in the early 1990s. I bought a new German unit and inspected it's quality. I see no reason why it should not last another 19 years. But then, who knows, it could fail tomorrow. Just because electronics are solid state doesn't necessarily mean they are more reliable. I don't know about you, but I have dealt with way more more than one failed solid state electronic widget in my life. They (solid state) could be more reliable, but it depends heavily on the design and manufacturing quality. Disclaimer, I have been in high reliability electronics design, quality and manufacturing for 32 years making military, airline and medical circuits and products. My views are certainly tainted. |
Not to pile on the rabbit, but I tend to agree with Mike.
Packing a spare is only prudent considering these relays are apparently near the end of the bathtub curve. I've no idea what they're rated for in terms of cycles, certainly less that 10K, but its ok given their environment. They're a known quantity / well characterized. Granted current workmanship of the original design may not be what it used to be, but a couple of FETs don't necessarily make it better. (retired from the industry myself so I too am biased) |
