My emergency start up battery just melted!

I just tried to jump start my car, which I have done many times in the past with no problems. This time however it melted and kind of blew up my emergency jumper battery. Has anyone seen something like this before? What could cause this?

yes.... I had a Schumacher speed charger. Hooked it up to my battery (battery was out of the car).... suddenly it started smoking and was done.

I'm guessing the battery was dead and charging it caused a major malfunction.
Bought a new battery.

I did a bit of research on this and got Antigravity XP-10. There were stories about fakes so I bought directly from their own website, not Amazon. I have only needed to use it once. If you need to buy, make sure to watch out for discount coupons.

it is a lithium battery, which are used in RC
cell phones and airplanes,
which have caused fires and such
either it recieved an amp surge when the vehicle was started

or a large amp draw from the vehicle

or the car battery may have an internal short

i have seen a 6 ft flame out of a 2s battery the was being charged at a 4s rating

But usually they blow up much more spectacularly. They really are a chemical fire bomb waiting to happen.
(Sold my Easy-Up to a Pelican who had a garage fire started by charging a brand new cordless lithium tool in his garage. He lost a BUNCH of vintage parts in the fire.)

I have a Lithium jump pack that is the size of a brick.
I used it to jump start my neighbor. Works great.
