Motor overhaul and update with Sleepers Speed Shop (ITB's, AEM, etc)

Hey Fellas,

Like most of you I've been reading all the ITB posts the last couple months and have been very intrigued. I have been toying with imports for 20 years so individual throttle bodies, modern fuel injection and programmable ECU's are very common and much easier to sort.

I finally bit the bullet and decided to go for it. And by go for it I mean take it all the way. We'll be building the motor, including ITB's, which will be monitored by an AEM Infinity unit.

I'll document what I can :)

Last week I dropped off my guards red SC with Sleepers Speed Shop in Costa Mesa. The owners, Mark and Len, are awesome. Mark has been in and around P cars for 15 years. Len is an ex-drag racer, killer fabricator and also builds cafe racers. They also have a number of skilled, younger fabricators. Old school souls with new school skills.

Today we pulled the motor. No surprises thankfully.

Next week I'll be back with some disassembly photos :D

Big thanks to Clay at Closed Course Motorsports, Andrew at Rasant and Al at X-Faktor for answering a bunch of questions for me the last 3 months!

Ryan

They are a great bunch of guys, I think you were lucky they had the time to devote to your project, they did some great stuff for me on my 72 911 hotrod, blucille.....looking forward to updates. Sounds like a great project.

Awesome. This would make for a great video.

flyn-hawn 02-10-2017 09:07 PM

Cool Ryan! After a lot of inner turmoil I bit the bullet as well and will be doing ITB EFI for the new rsr build, ala Rasant/AEM with help (read that everything) from Andrew.

Awesome! Andrew is a great guy.

What's the plan for the motor internals?

We're cracking the case open and will be doing all new bearings, rods, JE pistons, web cams and more than likely a little head work.

Ryan H 03-02-2017 02:41 PM

Update

We got a good chunk of the motor torn down today

CIS hitting the trash can

Pretty dirty but gets even better...

Wouldn't be a barn find without a nest!!!

6 of the exhaust stud needed to be extracted

Cams look to be in good shape and they are for sale! Head studs all in tact.

We're splitting the case next week. Stay tuned!

Jeff Alton 03-02-2017 03:42 PM

What is the plan for displacement, CR, twin or single plug, itbs (brand/size) and exhaust?

Cheers

KTL 03-02-2017 04:12 PM

Please don't seriously throw away that CIS stuff. If it was functional, someone here can use it

That rodent nest is incredible isn't it!

Eli W 03-02-2017 05:20 PM

Yeah, they better not have thrown it away, I'm running CIS on my twinplug 3.2 sc motor and it runs like a top.

I would change it out but it runs and starts so well I'm not messing with it.

All the takeoffs will hit the classifieds. I'm not that crazy :D

spyerx 03-02-2017 07:26 PM

Those guys do good work. Look forward to the progress.

Agree! We've got some cool stuff we're working on including a really nice bolt-in roll bar and coilovers with adjustable spindle height.

Tremelune 03-03-2017 05:22 AM

The mouse nest is the stuff of nightmares

brad1552 03-03-2017 06:42 AM

Of my 3 911s it's been hell to keep my 89 stock. But I am. I'm being good. Ok it does have sport shocks, turbo tie rods, aggressive brake pads, and a few other things.

But nothing like my 964 or GT3 which are full track/street builds.

Look forward to seeing the results.

mikl911 03-04-2017 04:00 AM

It's a decease we all have it. :)

Ryan H 03-13-2017 01:39 PM

We cracked the case last week.

Head coming off

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489440980.jpg

Found a cracked valve

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489441043.jpg

Bearings in great shape

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489441096.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489441120.jpg

Now I order a crap ton of parts, do my best to hide the receipts from my wife, and we assemble a badass 3.0!

Ryan

Hooo wee that one head with the toasted valve is ugly. Lucky that valve head didn't snap off and beat up the head, piston and cylinder. Lotsa leakage below that head too. How many broken studs did you guys find?

Actually none! I was surprised...

That is coming along nicely Ryan.

I have some 993SS cams new, from WebCams if interested. They are rewelds, but never ran.

Absolutely, have the machine shop do it while the heads are being tweaked. Then use a copper based never-seize liberally on the new assembly!

Without a doubt. I'm replacing or updating everything that needs it or could potentially need it.

This should be your goal! Mark & Preston did this for me last year and about 20 other major projects on this and other Porsches. I have known Mark since TruSpeed and he is my go to guy.

Hey Fellas,

Sorry for the lack of updates. We'll get back on track in the next week or so and things should move pretty quickly.

I had a motor issue with my Honda and decided to go through the interior (or lack thereof) and sort of re-debut it at our annual Eibach Meet. Like most of my projects it quickly spiraled out of control....

We'll be giving the 911 the same interior treatment minus the cage...

Couple quick updates:

- Len at Sleepers Speed Shop has finished design for a new adjustable spindle and we'll be building a coilover to mate it to. Should be a very nice setup!

- Based on a thread in the engine building forum I've shipped my heads to Craig Garret to be rebuilt and upgraded with Eibach valve springs. We'll also be utilizing a pair or cams from Web.

- We're off to paint in a couple weeks as the engine gets re-assembled!

Craig is almost finished with the heads. Now I'm starting to acquire all the pieces for the bottom end rebuild.

Rather than spend $1,000 on a new OE oil pump, I spent half and went with a rebuilt ported and polished pump from GT Series 1.

Heads

Craig just finished a set of heads for my current 3.0 build. He does very nice work. You will be happy...

He's awesome and very easy to contact too. I love finding guys like him....

Ryan H 08-22-2017 07:50 AM

Quick update!

Heads are back from Craig and they are amazing. He was fantastic to deal with. I'll be running the Closed Course Motorsports ITB manifolds and Craig was kind enough to port match the heads. Super guy! We also installed Eibach valve springs.

In an effort to shed some weight we're ditching the F/R bumpers, side skirts and SC tail. They ended up weighing 150lbs. They have been replaced by units from TRE Motorsports that really fit well.
