Guidance on Front Spoiler

Greetings to all,
My 1979 911SC Targa originally came with the 3 liter tail. The last owner sold it and replaced the deck lid with a non-tail version. While he never specifically said he sold the front spoiler too, my assumption is that he (or someone) did since is not there today. (That assumes there was one originally.)

Since I am a fan of the tail, I recently purchased a Carrera tail along with the deck lid. I like the Carrera better than the one that came on the SC so all good. I am saving up for paint before installing it.

As I talk to people it would seem there is a consistent opinion that if there is a spoiler in the rear, there needs to be one in the front to help keep the front in place with the additional down force in the back, which makes sense to me.

Now for the questions...

If I were to post a Want to Buy ad on the forums, what would I be asking for? Is "chin spoiler for 911SC" enough?

Is there more than one factory option out there? I have looked at image after image and there does seem to be some differences on what's available, but I wouldn't know how to put a name to one verse the other.

On that note, were might I find some front spoilers that are not factory? Any recommendation is appreciated.

The goal for me is to understand my options before making a decision I might regret later.

As always, thank you for your help and guidance.

From my experience the SC and Carrera should be interchangeable, it's the Turbo spoiler that differs.

And yeah, good move on the putting the spoiler on the front if you're going to put the tail on.

I purchased a new one when I had my car resprayed and I don't remember it costing an arm and a leg, so don't pigeonhole yourself to buying used. I'd imagine all the used ones you're going to run across will have some notable battle scars to them.

Not sure what the current prices are, but I was pretty sure you could get a chin spoiler brand new for under 300 bucks, and maybe under 250, so unless you're really aggressively into saving, I'd go for a new one.

Agreed, new is not too expensive, so go that route. Also, as mentioned above, chances are a used one will have some scrapes on it.

Also, when you go to install it, there will be different opinions about whether to remove your valance to do it (it mounts to the bottom of it), or install while the valance is attached to the car. My advice is REMOVE THE VALANCE AND INSTALL THE SPOILER WITH IT SITTING ON YOUR WORK BENCH. I did the install with the valance on the car, and it was a PITA. Remove 4 bolts holding the valance (plus the fog lights) and it is way easier than getting your hands/fingers around and over the valance to attach it. I did mine a number of years ago, when I was new to this world, so I didn't know better. Now, speaking from experience, I say drop the valance. Others will disagree certainly, but that's my $.02...

+1 on removing the valance.

And don't forget you'll need all the hardware to mount it.

Buy the spoiler with the hardware kit. The hardware is really expensive otherwise.

Thank you for the responses.
Shame on me for not starting with the obvious. I looked here and found the spoiler with the hardware for less than $400, which is better than what I would have expected.

Lyle, thank you for the tip on removing the valance to install it. The front of the car is low as it is (lower than in the picture) so removing the valance makes all the sense in the world.

Other options? Does anyone have a valance kit that they really like? With or without the oil cooler? Post a picture or two and please let me know where you got it.

Again, thank you for your replies!

If you are installing a tail, you def need to have the front spoiler. I installed mine with the front end up on jackstands without removal of the valance. If you have AC you will probably need to loosen/remove the guard cover on the front condenser - that will allow you enough room to reach up and install the hardware.
