Engine Management for a 3.2?
 

I am looking for a user programmable engine managment system (fuel/spark/idle control) for my 3.2 (Bosch monotronic). I am familiar with the UniChip and it seems to fit my needs. Any feedback on this system?

What else is available out there?

The Unichip is not programmable but the chip is burned for your particular engine.

The air flow meter, on the other hand, is very adjustable and is the main input to the DME for fuel, spark and idle by increasing or decreasing spring tension and adjustment of the rheostat wiper position. In effect, it's equivalent to having the same three dial control for high, low and gain as in programmmable aftermarket MAF systems as in the Huntley Racing or Autothority systems costing $2500 or more.

All your AFM requires you to do is remove the cover to access all adjustment parameters.

Why would you want a programmable engine management system? It's too complicated and subject to breaking down, not to metion the time spent to try figuring if you are too rich or too lean, if you need more advance or retard, and the constant fiddling around. There are already performance chips tuned to do what you want in a much more refined way with factory reliability.

Steve, I am planning on adding a blower so you can't just buy a chip for it and forget it. I feel I can do a custom set up with little difficulty so long as I have the ability to tune the car to respond to the additional air flow.

I see. If your blower runs around 6-8 psi max, I think a rising rate fuel pressure regulator may be sufficient. That is basically what some tuners who build turbo systems do, and in high boost situations, increase the duty cycle of the injectors by about 5% and maybe retard the ignition a bit in high load situations. Beyond about 500 hp, larger injectors are fitted. You may also want to talk to another Pelican member, Marc Romanowski, who is also planning to fit a supercharger in his 3.2, however working on a custom chip using a Pro-M mass flow meter.

Steve, you have revealed my alias! The reason I have asked is to evaluate my options. The Pro-M takes care of the fuel but not the spark. If there are two systems, one for fuel and another for spark, that I could go with, that would be fine as well, any ideas?

John, thanks. Your system looks interesting. What kind of $ are we talking about for the controller, injectors, and air measurement system? What kind of flow are the injectors capable of?

A second question to others, can MSD ignition contollers be used with the 3.2?

Based on what is posted so far, you will need:

- larger injectors than are in the standard Lenz system
and a different/optimized fuel map
- optimized ignition map
- different pressure sensor than in the standard Lenz system
- stereo lambda regulation (left/right cylinder banks)

all of this is not a problem

how much boost will you be running ?

what are you doing with the exhaust system ?

will you be tuning this on a chassis or engine dyno ?

price estimate would be starting around 3,000
