back and have good news

Just got back from picking up the car in WI. It seems the car is in better shape than I thought. It's got a carerra oil cooler, MFI from the looks of it,

It's been sitting for a year because the PO had overfilled the oil tank and it blew white smoke everywhere. He thinks he blew a seal. Is this possible and if so what kind of seal would it blow? Or was it just getting sucked into the engine and getting burned. on the way back there was oil dripping out of the left side of the engine. We didn't have time to look really closely.
The transmission may need a rebuild though. I've played around with the shifter and it's REALLY sloppy. first and second are there but sloppy with lots of play. third and fourth and worse and reverse and 5th are almost non existent. I think first I'm going to check the bushings and coupler. Any Idea's?

Those are the major mechanical difficulties it has right now.

There doesn't seem to be much rust just a few cosmetic spots to take care of

The deal came with a lot of extra goodies. An extra engine block 915 tranny, master cylinder, hood, 2 steering racks, front hood, rear hood, an extra set of glass minus windshield, extra set of carpeting and 3 boxes of miscellaneous stuff.

and thus starts my career as a porsche owner

More to come with pictures.

Make sure you pick up one of these: http://www.101projects.com

The slop in the shifter is from your shifter bushings - not your transmission. It's a $50, one-afternoon fix.

There's no seal that you would blow by overfilling. Simply clean everything out and make sure that the oil level is correct...

hehe already bought the book and read it 3 times by now I think my plan of attack to get this one on the road is to clean out the fuel lines, turn the rotors, flush the brake lines, new brake pads, new tires, probably new transmission fluid. Am I missing anything that should be done to a car that's been sitting for awhile?

Tim,

Lots of play in the shifter = new shifter bushings.

I changed the 2 bushings under the shift housing and realized that my transmission shifts pretty well after all. You will be amazed at the difference.

I hope so... right now there's nothing behind the shifter. I'll take a look on fri night or saturday and let everyone know

That solves those 2 problems. The white smoke is extra oil and the shifter's just bushings.

Does anyone have any experience reviving cars that have been sitting for months (or years)? I think I'm missing something in what I need to do but I can't think of it.

I guess I don't get your meaning.. the car will get a thurough going through just in case a seal blew.. I'm pretty sure when he overfilled the oil tank and it started smoking he thought he blew a seal when in reality it just threw pil everywhere and burned some up. Sat I'll have more information

Change the oil a bit sooner and look at the old stuff to make sure its clean and no bits falling out.

Switch the tranny to Swepco fluid and that will help almost any 915 gearbox. With the Swepco and new bushings you may be able to live with it the way it is.

Clean and grease the front wheel bearings and do the same with the CV joints. Check the rubbers on the CV joints and make sure that they are in good shape...

stuartj - LMAO!

Tim - congratulations! Good to have another Tarheel p-car. Hopefully you can make it on our next ride (which I hope comes soon!). Just don't try to put tranny fluid in your oil to clean out the sludge (see "stupid people" thread).

So give us some details on the car, and some pics!

I'm really glad to be a tarheel p-car owner. I hope to have the car on the road by then but it maybe at least a month or 2 by the time it's on the road at the earliest.

what there's a difference between tranny fuild and engine oil?

here are the raw pics I've got.. more details to come (Homework first)

Do a search for "Starting stored engines" for a thread on this very topic.

Good luck!

I've always thought that brown was a great color for a Porsche, esp. those that incorporate chrome.

Looks like a winner!

I really like it but then.. I'd love it if it was any color as long as it was a p-car
it's got 2 spots on the RS front spoiler but other than that the paintjobs in really good condition even after sitting under a tarp for a year and a half. I'll probably be leaving it brown for a long while.

You got this car for "a grand" + towing?

Sounds like a steal to me

Welcome!
Hope you enjoy the ride.

One thing you may wish to do is to flush the brake system.
Brake fluid is hydroscopic (means, it attracts water) and over time, moisture from the Tarheel air will migrate into the brake system and cause corrosion. Good practice I think, to empty the master cylinder, refill with new brake fluid and pump out the lines, by bleeding each wheel until you see nice, clean fluid.
There may be some old threads on doing this - I read some notes that recommend that you place a block under the brake pedal, so you don't fully stroke the master cylinder (the thinking is that 99% of the time, the master cylinder only strokes a short distance - and the cylinder condition beyond the normal stroke range is generally worse... I don't know this to be a fact, but it makes sense to me)

Happy motoring!

makaio: Thanks, I'm proud of it already and I've owned it for less than 48 hours, and haven't even driven it yet.

pull: yep a grand + towing we'll see how much more needs to go in.. there's still alot of work to do. The drivers door doesn't latch unless it's locked, the sunroof motor doesn't work, the interior needs alot of work including new seats and the keys work only sometimes and doesn't work at all in the ignition. Those are all the non mechanical problems.

mike: HAHA you mean that little brown thing on the left isn't the engine? ohh wait.. that's a mouse's nest

joey: yep, that's in the plan for getting this one road worthy again. It's been in Wisconsin so this tarheel humidity isn't a factor but just for saftey's sake it'll get done
