When replacing the rear window seal With defrost, 1980 911sc do you unplug the wires from inside the engine bay and then cut slots in the new seal to accommodate them with the window partially in place on the car OR remove the electrical harness from the car, rig and re-solder them out of the car and then fit the window into the car? Follow up, the harness splits into 2x2, two plug beneath the rear fuse box quite obviously. Two seem to ground behind the fuel filter and fuel accumulator? Thanks

I did this last year. Unplug the harness from the engine bay and feed the wires up through the hole in the rear shelf. Then remove the window from the car. Use a leather punch to create the holes in the new seal for the wiring to attach to the defroster connections on the window. Feed the wires through the new seal, put the seal on the window, put the aluminum trim in the seal as usual, and reinstall the window in the car.

It's not that difficult, but spend some time examining the old seal and see how the wires are routed and where the seal holes are before you begin on the new seal. When I did it, I made a diagram of the wires and where they attached to the defroster connections.

I need to do this on an early LWB, and unfortunately, do not have pics of how the wires for the defrost were run through the seal (do have the old seal though). I also have to see how the black "jumper wires" were attached between the leads on the bottom of the glass. At a loss here and if anybody has ANY pics of how this is routed, would be much appreciated. I don't know if this is shown on an electrical schematic somewhere.? Thx again

The rear window grid is a nice thought but that is why one buys the rear window with seal and aluminum in place with the wires hanging out of the corner.

I did it pretty much as Dave said. The hole punches are the only tricky part, but you might find that the wires have existing bends, from the prior install, that will point to where they want to pass through the channel divider in the seal.

Don't know where the contacts are located on the targa window, but the circuit would be the same.
