What type of stainless steel is the stock heat exchanger

Have a hole on one of my heat exchangers that is repairable, but need to know the specific type of stainless steel for the patch.

Anybody knows?
If it matters the car is an 87 Carrera.

Thanks in advance!

Stock HEs are mild steel AFIK,,,aftermarket ones like SSI and now made by Dansk are s/s. Any muff shop should be able to patch it. Put a magnet on it. S/S has a low magnetic quality if at all. But either way both can be welded.

I general, it will be a 300 series SS+ weldable, 400 series will be magnetic

Like Joe Bob says, the stock HE's are not stainless. SSI's were created because the originator of SSI's was tired of patching his steel HE's.

Check the part number stamped on your stock HE. There were two different parts, one ending in 01 and one ending in 00. I have a set of each here, polishing the 00 set.

I haven't had a chance to check for a part number but snapped some pix. If they are not stainless wouldn't they rust??

Check it out. These are far from new, yet shiny(ish) except for a small hole that rusted out where the tail pipe connects.

Here is a picture showing the bottom of the HE. I took a wire brush to clean it up a bit.... how could this be not stainless???

The part number is 93021102901. When I search for it, I still don't see any references to the material.

Anybody?
