3.0 sc exhaust question

Has anyone tried replacing the cat. with a small muffler (like a flowmaster) and running the pipe straight out the back. This would allow you to remove the original muffler entirely. Would this work for street use without being overly obnoxious. If everyone is laughing at this idea--its just cause I've had my car in the body shop since christmas when some one backed into the front end. I cant wait to get it back and I'm goin crazy here looking at this great web site and not able to play with my car.

Does the cat. reduce the noise enough to run with out a muffler and if so would there be any hp increase. How about the factory muffler without a cat--alabama is not an emission state !!! Just cant pop for $600-1500 for SSI's now but want a good sound preferably with a large single outlet. Thanks in advance for the advice!!

Check out InstantG.com they have a muffler just like you discribe. Run a search here on muffler or exhaust..there have been some interesting threads.

Sorry about your car, but think of it this way, at least you're some where warm enough to drive it if it was home from the shop. I don't think I'll be taking my car out much between now and March. It's sub-freezing up here in Illinois with snow in the forecast...I wish I was still in Alabama!

There is more restriction in the cat than in the muffler. I first removed the cat and welded in a piece of pipe to the stock muffler. Any muffler shop will do that cheap. You can use the flanges from the cat. It performed better and I was quite happy. Slightly lower sound.

I have one.

I have a muffle just like you describe. It uses a cat bypass pipe and an Edelbrock RPM Series muffler, all of which is located where the cat used to be and exits out the single valence hole. Its very similar to the one on Instant-G's web site but was created by another pelican lister. It works great, saved 25 pounds in the rear and sounds very aggressive (loud). The women in my neighborhood hate it, the guys like it and the kids always know when I come and go.

Send me you email at ptb@courtland.com and I will send you a picture of it. My current system does not have any photo software to post a picture.
