3.2 Carrera muffler reconditioning?

Greetings all,

I searched but couldn't find anything.

I have a couple 3.2 Carrera sausage mufflers lying around, my original one is in excellent condition and my spare has some surface corrosion, etc. I'd like to clean up the surface corrosion and restore the unit to its former glory (install a new tip, etc).

Any. Suggestions for how to go about cleaning up the exterior? Also, how to keep the unit looking that way (the rest of my undercarriage is very clean / corrosion free).

Thanks,
Frank

Have it blasted, bead blasted if it is not rusty and then have it ceramic coated. It will remain looking like new after that.

I couldn't agree more. You should have seen how these SSI's looked before I had them ceramic coated!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489021334.JPG

And here is how the entire OEM exhaust components on my friend's 85 Carrera turned out.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1489021615.JPG

Wow! That's blingtastic.

I see you are in the Bay Area. SF Bay Area? If so, where did you get the work done?

muffler condition

Before spending any money on your muffler, take it to a muffler expert ,get his opinion,
because the inside could be no good, and a waste of time .the inside is the important
item ,not the outside.

I couldn't agree more. The only way to do this correctly to last is ceramic coating.
Her are pics of my exhaust I just had done by Accessories Plus in Belmont. You can get a few colors, including the chrome look, but I preferred a gray subtle look.

Yep, Assessories Plus in Belmont, CA is where I had mine done too. Turn around time was only a week to boot!

Well, I suppose I had mine 'internally inspected' during a recent baffle-ectomy. Unit was cut open, two of the four internal baffles were removed and then the unit was welded shut again. Vroom-vroom!

Frank, how does the baffle-ectomy muffler sound compared to stock?

Alas, I haven't run it on the car yet as I already have a SS Dansk 1/1 Sport unit on the car.

This being said, I hope to try the Baffle-delete unit on another 3.2 soon.

Ceramic coating isn't the ONLY way to go on exhaust coatings. I've had fantastic results with abrasive cleaning and then painting with LPS cold galvanize gray paint. It ends up looking like the older cars that originally had gray painted exhaust.

I've used it on headers and mufflers with excellent results. Needs to be heated up to cure and of course just installing it on the car takes care of that. Cures to a hard, durable finish.

I'll be employing the baffleectomy muffler within the week. I'm pretty excited. I will report back. Also, I would like to clean it up, but not necessarily coat or a different finish. Thoughts on media blasting it and some kind of clear coat?

Has anyone used one of those small, flexible borescopes (as available on Amazon) to inspect the inside of the muffler? Though they’re not as maneuverable as a medical endoscope, I wonder if they’d give you a general look without cutting the muffler apart.

I had my 914-6 heat exchangers ceramic coated years ago and they still look great, so I’m a big fan of that surface coating.

Ok, so Tom Amon painted the muffler with black high-heat paint post deleting two of the four baffles. I have to admit that I expected it to be louder when I first started it up. I was sitting in the driver's seat. It didn't seem any different. After driving it the past day though, I will say that it's subtly aggressive. It doesn't impinge on a 3.2's signature sounds. In fact, it sounds even more air-cooled 911 than stock. If that makes sense. I still hear the turbine like wail and the cooling fan, etc, and the exhaust note is slightly more forceful / pronounced. It's hard to explain. I'd like to hear what deleting three of the four baffles sounds like (Tom cautioned against it as it could be too loud, but I'm not so sure now).

Anyway, I took a before vid (unfortunately, I didn't have time to get a decibel meter reading) and I'll take an after vid this weekend and post 'em up.

Here are some pics.

Not all that long ago I removed my Dansk 1-in-2-out (84mm) and reinstalled the OEM muffler after reconditioning it.

The OEM muffler had relatively low miles and was in good condition except for some surface rust/discoloration. I checked the inside using an inexpensive General-brand compact inspection borescope.

I took drill-mounted wire brushes to the muffler to thoroughly clean it and then resprayed it used DEI high-temperature exhaust paint. Luckily, I have access to a large enough industrial-type oven that I could cure the paint properly.

Overall, the results look good, and very much like a new OEM muffler. And a whole lot quieter than the Dansk set-up.

I'll post a photo in a day or so - I ran out of time this evening.

Ok, I finally got around to pairing the Modified stock muffler with a free flowing pre-muffler. It's interesting. This is just an idle vid, but I will say she sounds angry / pissed off at WOT high RPMs.
