Stereo wiring question

Okay, I have my Kenwood CD receiver, got the harness through a fellow Pelicanite. Here's the question, I can match up the speaker wires but the old wiring for the Blaupunkt only has a red, green and brown wire.

The new Kenwood harness has:
- Red
- Yellow
- Black

and 3 other wires marked with little tags:
- P. Cont
- Illumi
- Ant Cont

Any ideas on how I match up my 3 existing wires to all of the above?

I would have to guess for the asignment on the Blaupunkt. You should have voltmeter handy to confirm.

red Switched power +12V
green Hm, power antenna output +12V
brown Ground

wire.

The new Kenwood harness has:
- Red Permanent power +12V
- Yellow Ignition switched power +12V
- Black Ground

and 3 other wires marked with little tags:
- P. Cont Guess: That could an output for an external amplifier. Leave unconnected.
- Illumi Guess: Power from potentimeter controling brightness of receiver display. Can hook up to yellow to have it bright all the time
- Ant Cont power antenna ouput

Any ideas on how I match up my 3 existing wires to all of the above?
Hope that helps
Ingo

I replaced my Blau. w/ a newer Blau. a few mos. ago and one hitch I found is the radio ant. that is imbeded in the windshield has an amplifier that needs 12v or else your radio won't pick up squat. If I remember correctly the amp power wire was black and wrapped around the larger ant. connection, connect it to your Ant. Cont. out on the receiver (I had to change the term lug type).

You're lucky you have an Illumi Cont, that is connected to your dash light cont. so you can dim the receiver backlights (very nice). I believe if it's NOT connected the lights on receiver will stay bright all the time.

HTH,

GSpreeman, make sure that the red wire from the Kenwood (permanent power) is attached directly to the positive (+) side of the battery. I've known people who have tried to wire through the fuse panel and have had problems including interferance and most importantly cooking wires. Do it and be neet about it and you'll be glad you did.

fuse that red puppy at the battery!!!!!!!. do NOT just use the fuse at the unit.

the p cont. is probably for your radio /clock memory.

you can use the ant output to control an amp ( usually blue on a kenwood? )

if you add an amp, ground the head and amp at the same spot to avoid a grounding loop problem.

don't let it kill your battery, if the car is parked a few days. keep an eye on it

it's a sony if you look inside.

JUST did this on my 89 930. ischmitz is very close to correct (or is correct and I'm just clarifying?)

On the Porsche:

Red - switched power (ignition)
Green - constant power (always on)
Brown - ground

so to the Kenwood you go:

PORSCHE - KENWOOD

RED----------->GREEN (constant power)
GREEN-------> YELLOW (car on/switched)
BROWN-------> BLACK (ground)

the wire on the Kenwood that says ANT CONT is live when you turn the radio on and should be connected to the antenna amplifier (assuming you have the windshield antenna). The others will not be used.

IF you want the dimmer on the stereo to always be dim (handy if it's got a bright display) you can connect the Ilumi lead to the RED (constant power) lead so that the unit always thinks the dash lights are on. Your other option is to run a lead from the dash lights to the Illumi lead.

There's a whole other ball of wax if you have the factory amplifier installed...

PCONT is power for an amplifier to be controlled by the radio unit.

(BTW: This is how the wires on my radio were labeled, you may want to double check online as there may be manuals which could cause you headaches later! I can't vouch for your exact installation so grab that voltmeter and use it first!)

Good luck and enjoy the tunes!

Give me some clues on how big of a fuse I should install. I assume I can pick up an inline fuse at your basic autoparts store.

15 amp max, fuse constant AND ignition wires. this is only to protect the car from the radio should something fail.
did you get the other wiring figured out?

Got it up and running. Seems to be fine. I put a 3 amp fuse on the constant power wire. Will put one on the ignition wire as well. The Napa autoparts salesman said I could go with 3 amp...should I instead go with 15?

the 3 amp will be too little if you turn it up.
a 10 amp will do fine also, i don't see that head unit pulling more than 10 amps when cranked.

Thanks again.

When you DO feel the need for a subwoofer, consider the powered Kenwood KSC-WA62RC (woox), about $220. Fits on the floor in back. It's good enough for a budget-minded person like me who would rather listen to the flat-six melody anyways.
