MFI Fuel Pump Removal

Hello All,
I am getting ready to pull MFI pump and send to to Gus for a rebuild. Anything that I need to do to prepare?

I have heard that the crank has to be set at top dead center, and the best way to get to TDC is to pull the engine?

I reckon it's always a good idea to set the motor at TDC when you do any work, but the MFI pump is actually timed on a different mark "FE". You shoud be able to turn the crank with a 19mm wrench on the pulley nut with the engine in situ.

Pump can be removed with crank in any position. Watch out for lots of oil spilling out when you try to lift the pump out of the car, it needs to be tilted and if you're not careful... oil everywhere.

You may be able to find some caps for the oil intake/return lines. This will help to stop making a mess and Gus recommended to me that I remove the thermostat and also maybe the solenoid(s) on the front of the pump to keep them from being damaged during shipping.

I've found that most of the oil comes out of the low-pressure fitting, if you can somehow close it off before you remove the pump it might help. However, I've never had too big a problem pulling the pump as long as you don't tip it too much.
You might want to consider a new drive belt if you don't know when the last one was changed, now's the perfect time to replace it.
Just out of curiosity, how much time did Gus quote you on the rebuild?

Send him your injectors also. He will test them as well and tell you if they need replacing

Gus quoted $900 - $1,200 for the rebuild. I am going to try to get it send out to him in the next couple of weeks. He said it would take him about 6 weeks to get it completed.
