Street racing? How about street time trialing?

I was out and about doing some errands this afternoon, one of them took me out to an undisclosed industrial area. I was in the 911 with import grrl, and earlier in the day I'd put the A032R's on, new Pagid Oranges and bled the brakes, all in preparation for a DE @ Sears Point on Saturday. So I decided to have a little fun. I picked a fairly new section of this industrial area, one with some lazy-S shaped wide streets and and shallow drains instead of sidealks. Even better, we could do a complete 'circuit' and no go anywhere near the main streets. Import Grrl thought her car (RSX) was the be-all, end-all of street cars, and I had to show her otherwise. She's ridden in the 911 on the track, but had never driven it until now. It was funny to watch her hit the brakes the first time, just about putting herself thru the windshield.

So I let her take several laps, teaching her the 'line' thru our impromptu road course. By the time we were done, she was able to set up and drift thru the turns properly. She still didn't feel comfortable using all of the 'track' but she did well under the circumstances. She learned to let the car drift to the outside and not try to fight it, and with these tires, the feedback thru the wheel is very distinct.

We each took many laps, probably spent 30-35 minutes total (and over 1/4 tank of gas) on the excercise. We actually had a crowd cheering us on, some guys who worked in one of the buildings came out to see what was going on. Once the crowd showed up, I took 3 more really hot laps, and then bailed out just in case someone decided to call the track steward^H^H^H^H^H^H cops.

All in all, it was a fun afternoon, and more rewarding than blowing the doors off the occasional Z06 or Civic.

I have a 3am cloverleaf/freeway *track*. Great in the rain. Been in the ice plant once or twice (for those of you that live on the East side of the Big River, we have ice plant landscaping on the sides of the roads).

I keep the reciever mounted in the car, but I don't have a transmistter. One could do the outlaw time trial with the transmitter mounted in another car parked on the 'track'. Hmmm...
