Did anyone else go to Pomona on Sunday?

I hadn't been in a while, but went with a neighbor who is trying to get his '71 T back on the road.

I hadn't been in a few years, but the Porsche parts section seemed much smaller than in the past. Seemed like it was 90% VW stuff. There used to be a good number of new parts vendors there, but most seem to be gone now. I wonder if the Internet is hurting Pomona?

In the car section, were there any 914s that WEREN'T V-8s??

There was a really clean looking red/tan '88 Carrera with a turbo flatnose body conversion, 60,000 miles, supposedly never wrecked, asking $22,000, but willing to take less. It looked really nice, if that is your thing, and sounded good, too.

And, of course, the usual early cars tarted up to look like later cars. Always lots of those at Pomona.

Overall, as far as Porsches and parts go, it doesn' seem like the event it used to be . . . or maybe it's just me in my old age.

It was my first time going to Pomona. There were really no Porsche parts. There was that 914-6 in a deep blue color. There was a guy on the phone with his friend (I guess) and his friend said he wanted to buy it. The first guy just kept wearing down the seller. It was $17,000, then $16,000, then $15,000, next $14,500. The guy was yelling and hustling around--he ended up handing him a grand in cash and taking the car for $14,000. It looked like a good deal. Then there was a real white-and-red 73 RSL (real one) for $100K. I wished I had that much--seeing how I just saw another collector condition 73RSL for $149K. Tons of Vee-dubs and buses and "Chevy" (NOT "Shevy") 914's. Sort of disappointing in terms of parts but I liked looking around at the cars.

The Porsche parts section is definitely dwindling at Pomona.

I didn't go on Sunday -- I'm hoping that the people wanting to sell Porsche parts in So. Cal. are holding out for the Dunkel Bros. swap meet.

However, I was a bit disappointed with the swap meet at the German Autofest late last year.

Pomona is hit and miss for Porsche parts. Another way to say it is you can't miss it 'cause your part might show up. Just after I bought an RS front bumper from a fellow Pelican, one showed up at Pomona in Dec. for ten bucks less. No big deal, but I never saw one there before. So, it's hit and miss. Go to Dunkel's on 2/2/, all the P-car stuff and no VW.

Anyone have details on dunkels? The what when where?

COLDBASS 01-20-2003 12:30 PM

Although I was searching for some C2 "take-offs", I couldnt help but noticing that there seemed to be alot more Fuchs for sale than usual.
Then again, I've never been there before as early as I was...(6 a.m. with Girlfriend and 9 year-old step daugther in tow. Yes, that was me towing a red stake bed wagon with the little princess safely secured).

Looking forward to Dunkel's...
Bob

I basically stopped going to Pomona a couple years ago. Got some killer deals there over the years but most of what I need/want these days just is not available there. If I had an American V8 car or a VW Bug/Ghia/Bus, I'd be more inclined to get up early and go out there.

i flew down there a couple of years ago expecting to bring back a haul, and there was squat! learned my lesson. nice weather though, other than the strange brownish color of the sky. i went to a woody meet in orange on sunday, so all was not lost.

Dunkel info at http://www.356registry.org/Events/calendar_detail.html#Feb

starts at around 7 on Feb. 2nd, if you want to park a Porsche on the grass get there early, last year was a zoo. Free admission, car show, swap meet, museum.

It's getting bigger every year, it's about the biggest Porsche thing in these parts.

I went. Parts are scarce there although I did see a nice pair of early fenders for $325. Also SC rear quarter panels for $200 pr. That's about it though.

If your into VW then it's the way to go.

Unless you get to Dunkel's REALLY, REALLY early, I wouldn't necessarily make it a priority to bring your Porsche. You'll end up parking it on some non-descript street in an industrial section of the town, well away from the meet.

But, the Dunkel event is quite good. I had a much better time at Dunkel's last year than at Pomona this weekend. Plus, Dunkel's is free! (No $6 parking and $7 admission like Pomona).

It's a very nice way to spend a Sunday morning!

I got there at around 7 AM last year and here was a big line. This year I'll be pulling in at around 6:15. That means I have to get up before 6. Darn :)

So the usual cadre of $7000 early S's wasn't there this month?????? :D -- Curt

No, it must have been "Bizzaro-Pomona" this time, because while there were no $7K S's, there WAS a $15K 1972 914 1.7 (complete with Weber carbs!)

Went Sunday. I hadn't tried selling anything at Pomona for about ten years. Now I remember why. I had forgotten about the swap meet mentality (any kind of swap meet). No matter what you ask for something, you'll get an offer of 50% less. Then some scum bag stole a 901 gear set while I wasn't looking. Not a total loss though; on my way out, I picked up a mint set of thick flange SSIs for $450. Yeah, I made a guy a low ball offer.........i feel so dirty

Bobboloo 01-20-2003 08:49 PM

I saw those SSI's. I didn't even ask the price. Dooh!

Yeah, I went. The size of Porsche stuff shrinks year after year. But this time I found something I need and got pretty good deal. :) Anybody saw this early car? I think it's nicely done.

That's Mitch Rossi's project car featured in European Car Magazine; also his VARA racer. It's very clean. Is it for sale? Go here for a few more pics.

i went to pomona once.............i don't think i'd go back again. although i heard from folks that you have to be there at 4 AM to get any good deals, i didn't see any reason to wake up that early to try.

when i want to meet P-car folks and kick tires, i'll go to the monthly PCA luncheon. if i want to see porsche race cars in action, i'll do a track event with POC. if i want to buy used porsche parts, i'll visit Dunkel's once a year, fly to Hayward to see Parts Heaven, or lurk on Ebay/Rennlist/Pelican.
