'83 3.0 Distributor Vac Pod Questions
I'm rebuilding mine with help from Gunter's excellent posts. Got a few questions.
1. Which nipple is advance, and which is retard? I'm pretty sure I've figured out that A is advance. 2. If I disconnect the retard from my throttle body (ala Steve Weiner), I assume I should cap off the nipples on both the TB and the dizzy. 3. The movement of the arm on the vacuum pod is sluggish, like the insides are a bit gummy. What's inside? and what's the best way to clean in there without making things worse? Thanks! ![]() |

Hi Jameel,
Was just about to ask you if you've rebuilt your distributor. Sorry I can't help you on the vacuum question, good luck, you'll have it running soon. Rutager

1. A is advance. B is retard. 2. I capped both nipples. Throttle body and vacuum pod. 3. Look up distributor service on the search. There is a thread that shows you how to take it apart and clean it. My vacuum advance was not working at all until I cleaned and freed it all up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Excellent! Tim's video is exactly what I've been doing with mine with my Mity Vac. Great!
My retard isn't holding though, but the advance is. I'm going to call it good. I did just come back in from the shop and removed my pinion gear. There's a plastic/phenolic washer down at the bottom. It was sandwiched between the two shims/washers in the picture. I didn't get a new one of those in my ************ rebuild kit. Is it something I can leave out if I replace its thickness with the steels shims that came in my kit? ![]() |

Well I did a little research and answered my own question. My rebuild kit did come with an oil-lite bronze shim to replace the fiber one. So looks like I'm good to go.

The simple approach I took to disabling the retard function at the vacuum pod was to remove the hose, place a small nipple cap over the stem on the pod and then fit a golf tee to the line, then looping the line into the spark plug leads so it is available should I need it in the future.
