Post How many fans?

My 77 has a bracket and some taped-off wires in the engine bay that I assume are for the auxiliary heater blower.
The switch on the console runs a fresh air fan that feeds the little side vents and the two in the center of the dash.
There's a trio of sliders to the left of those outlets that are pretty jammed in the full right position, but moving the top one a bit to the left makes a fan somewhere turn and push air out the defroster outlets.
I didn't know there was another fan.
Where's this one hiding? What do those other controls control? And how do I un-jam them?
Thanks,

My car is a '78, but yours may be similar. Aside from any A/C stuff, my car has two circulation fans, one in the engine compartment for the heat, and another in the trunk for the defrost and hot/cold fresh air circulation.

Again, I'm not sure how your particular panel/levers are set up, but on mine, the top one's control the fan speed and fresh air vent (open or closed to the outside world), the middle one directs the air flow (through the defrost vents or down to the floor and small dash vents), and the bottom one controls the temperature (warm or cold air).

Several things can happen to cause the levers to stick; a bent cable, stuck cable, loose connection on the lever assembly, sticking flappers, etc. When I did the troubleshooting on mine, I disconnected all the connections on the vent assembly to make sure all the flaps moved freely. Then, I tried moving the lever in the car by pushing and pulling on the cable end in the trunk. You can try the little cable injection thingy that injects lubricant into the cable, but the best way is to remove the panel and all the cables to lubricate/replace everything. With it out of the car, you can extract the center metal "pushrod," and give it a good coating of graphite.

Michael,
If the dash levers control the flapper boxes (I'm assuming you mean the ones on top of the heat exchangers) then what does the lever under the handbrake control?
I'm going to have to crawl around the car with someone else pulling and pushing things and flipping switches until I can find out where everything goes.

The levers between the seats control the amount of heated air that leaves the heat exchangers thus to the air distribution box at the back of the trunk/behind the dashboard. The dash mounted levers from top to bottom are cool air direction;up/down, cool air volume/fan, warm air direction. Acess to the adjustments is behind the cardboard panel at the aft end of the trunk.
